You can do that on tie rod ends but it's tougher to grease ball joints that way. Also, it's not fixing the worn balljoint, it only temporarily quiets it.
I agree about the worn joints.
I squirted in about 6 pumps of Mobil 1 lube using one of those small grease guns. I did the ball joints and tie rod ends. I wanted to get some grease in there and not swell the boots.
