I found you by a google search of the problem with my 94 Ranger.

I just bought a 94 Ranger Extended cab 4X4 with 4.0 V6. We just got our 1st snow and I tried out the 4 wheel drive. This morning I heard a loud clunking noise from the fornt end which got worse when I made a turn. I took it out of 4 wheel, stop and locked out the hubs again and the noise went away. Could this be U-joint or CV problem or something worse. I have an appointment with a Ford Dealer service dept. tomarrow put they may not be the best place to go. What do you think.

If the noise isn't there in 2WD, I would say more likely you have a bad axleshaft u-joint.

Thanks for the conformation. I had the truck in the shop and they found both u-joints were bad and the axleshafts as well.

...I'm glad you resolved your problem and I was sure it was the bearings...

...That sounds like it cost some serious bucks to have them replace???...

The cost for this fix is $590. I didn't take it to the Ford Dealer. The work is being done by a local front end specialist. I think it is worth the $ for repair because the truck it is very clean has 108k and runs great with no rust which is good here in Wisconsin.
