Have to help my son replace the front hubs as the brgs.are bad. This is a 2000 auto4x4 and I have never done this before. Is there any special tools needed? He lives a couple hundred miles from me so I need to make sure I have necessary tools. Is there a thread explaining this repair that I could review ? Is it very difficult ?? Thanks for your help !!!

There's a recent good thread with pics by jwrezz. Use a search to locate it. Also on a 2000 Expl you don't need a special hub socket, it's a 32mm socket, I used a deep well. You will also need a breaker bar to loosen it up. As per torque specs, I think theyre a little different for the 2nd generation.

I found that thread. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115811

Hope this helps

No.... on a 2000 It's a 32mm nut and it's torqued to 200ft lbs so make sure you have good breaker bar and a couple of pieces of pipe. What I did when I did my bearings, with the wheel off i put a piece of pipe between the lug studs and broke the nut loose that way. I have 2ft breaker bar and I put another ~3ft piece of pipe on thier to break the nut loose. I did ta the same thing in reverse to tighten it though I'd recommend getting a torque wrench to tighten them back up.

wow...200 ft lbs...i wonder why it's so different
