Front locker for AWD...will it help?

I was thinking but would a front locker on an AWD Explorer help with offroading? With the current setup if one of the front wheels come off of the ground all of the power gets transfered to that one wheel. But with a locker that wouldn't happen...correct? Wouldn't both front (or rear) wheels have to be off the ground?

I would not recommend a front locker in a AWD unless you go with a fully selectable. A rear locker however wouldn't hurt again though I just like selectables.

Swap that AWD t-case and then put what you want up there.

I would go with something like an ARB air locker up front so I could still have driveability.

And about rear lockers...are they that much better than the stock one? And what good will they do if I get just one front wheel stuck and all the power is just going to that one?

Unfortunately there is no ARB air locker or Eaton/Detroit electric locker for the 95-2001 Explorer for the D35. Another option you can do is try to find a limited slip carrier.. Thats better than nothing.

there is no stock rear locker.... the rear of a ford is either open or limited slip equipped

and the rear locker will help with the one front tire spinning, becuase it will allow both your rear tires to get equal traction, in the air or not, the transfer case will not send 100% powerto your 1 front wheel in the air.....

the stock ford LS sucks IMO...From seeing it work on other rigs, i would have to say that it is damn near inactive. Go with a true locker for the rear (aussie, Lock right, Full Detroit...) it will help out dramastically. A front locker on an AWD on the street would be hell. Try and find one of the old powertrax LS for the front (which could be hard and expensive since they are no longer in production). Swap out that Tcase for a manual shift, or even one of the electric shifts if you want it easy. Then get yourself one of the front Aussie Lockers. They are the only one that is in production at the moment that will work in the front IFS of the explorers.
