I need to do something about my terrible brakes. They squeal, they hardly stop and I'm afraid that in an emergency that something bad might come about. I've checked the pads and they have a ton left. They were a little glazed so I roughed them up. The rotors are glazed pretty bad and the picture doesn't really do it justice with my phone.

I was thinking about having them turned. Does anybody know who can do this? Around me is Advance auto, autozone, napa, carquest, and machine shops which is my last choice. New ones are $22 a piece but these are original and have never been changed, which was why I was thinking that they are thick enough to be turned.

If someone quoted me $22 for a new rotor, I would thank them for their time and walk out the door. They can not be worth the effort of replacing them. They would have to had been manufactured to the absolute minimum standards. (thin and of inferior steel)
They may last you a year, maybe not.
Most shops do not turn rotors anymore because the replacements have become so inexpensive that they can not make a decent profit doing the work.

My opinion is to call around for the mid grade or top grade rotors. Should run you around 40-50 each for a good one. Then replace the rotors and the brake pads, that will cure your problem for sure. (again this is my opinion, its free, take it for what its worth)

Mounty, what do you consider to be a quality brake rotor? What brand do you recommend?

Alot of the 'value' rotors have fewer vanes between the surfaces, causing them the heat cycle faster. And that's when you get rotor warp.

Stay away from the ULTRA cheap rotors if at all possible....sometimes you have to do it, due to your financial situation at that time. Just know that you will be replacing them again in 15k miles or so..

Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors...66576 and 66565. Best rotor for the buck out there. I use them on everything I work on and have never been disappointed. No warping problems either. Use them in conjunction with a quality ceramic pad front and rear and kiss your brake problems goodbye. Be sure to replace the hydraulics if necessary (including hoses).

If you have a NAPA near you they spec and turn them for about 15 bucks.

I bought a set of the 25 dollar models and my brakes were worse within 5,000 miles than they were with the crappy old ones. Take Cobraguy's advice and pay a few more bucks and actually have something that will last. Also make sure you clean everything well before putting the new ones on. It only takes a spec of rust to cause problems.

I'm going to look into having them turned. I can't afford $100 for rotors right now and really don't want to go with the cheapies (whearever brand from advance) from what everybody is saying.
