Fellas, need help and FAST...Stopped at the gas station, just for coffee, and the truck wouldn't start up again. It's turn over, start and die immediately. I immediately think fuel pump but i've been having vacuum issues as well. AAA'd it to the mechanic and here's the deal:
Fuel pump is shot - $540 to R&R (?). HOWEVER, before they even get to that, they're saying that the fuel system on the '96 was a 1-year design and a much needed clip for the filler neck (neck leaking) is required but no longer available. The neck may have to be replaced as well, depending on where the leak is coming from - ANOTHER $400. They said the're gonna go to stealership to see if there is a comparable filler neck that they can mod for le$$.
I don't know what's involved here, so i need your assistance...Guys, does this sound right? $540 for the pump, installed? (Autozone has a pump & sending unit for $240) - even if it's $60/hr labor, we're talking almost 5 hours??? Has anyone out there heard of the "1-year design?" I'd trust these guys with my life. Been goin' there for years and have never paid more for a service than necessary, and ALWAYS much less than Ford.
Finally, before i bite the bullet (almost LITERALLY) and call my mechanic back to g'head with the repairs, could this be a major reason WHY i'm only getting 10-12 mpg? I'm damned if i do and damned if i don't. Can't sell it if it don't run, and can't drive it if i don't wanna PAY. I'll burn the b!t*h before i put another grand into it and still suck 10mpg @ $2.10/gallon :fire: :fire: :fire:
