I currently have a '96 and am considering an new explorer. I rented an '03 4.0 few years back and it was much worse than my '96. I thought I read that ford made some improvements to eng/trans to help fuel economy. Would an '06-'07 use approximately the same amount of fuel as a '96 or is this unreasonable as it is a larger vehicle. :us:

I also have a 96 ex which avg 15 mpg , my 2004 avg 20 mpg.

I had a 98 XLT 4.0 SOHC. I consistently got 18 MPG (winter) and 20 MPG (summer). That is actual MPG calculated over the same mixed city/HWY route.

My 06 XLT 4.0 gets almost the exact same mileage over the same route. I might be getting about .5 MPG worse, but it is barely broken in (6500 miles) and I haven't had it a full summer yet.

Edit: Now that the temp here is above 60 I am getting over 20 MPG. So, I believe it is as good as (or better than) the 98 SOHC.

What MPG did you experience, and how did you measure it?

When you refuel, reset the trip odometer then once you refill, divide the gallons over the miles giving you miles per gallon.
