Trace the fuel pump wires. Probe with a multimeter to find the point at which there isn't 12V anymore when there should be. Might be a bad spot on the pump motor instead.

Insulation piercing probe tips for the multimeter would make it easier to trace to the point where you can't access the wiring anymore without taking the tank off or cutting a hole in the floor panel for access, so you can verify whether power is getting that far before going to the extra effort to get at the pump and last connector at the sending unit.

Started having problems with my 96 on Saturday. Traced wires, checked everything I could think of, nothing helped. Sunday, went out, hit bottom of skid pkate with hammer, pump started working. Did it again this morning. Started, no start, hit skid plate, started. I am going to cut an access hole in the floor to pull the pump.

run a jumper wire just past the inertia switch and see if it works temporarily (of course you could put a in line switch to help with the "temporary fix").... then you can decide on the best approach there after assuming it starts / runs more predictably.
