I have a spare fuel filter for my past 1997 XL 4.0L OHV that has succumbed to a drunken driver and was wondering if the filter would fit my 2000 XLS 4.0L SOHC Explorer? The filter canister is somewhat smaller in diameter than that of the one for the 1997, however the inlet and outlet lines look to be the same diameters just the length is slightly different, but the lines are long enough to reach. Has anyone ever tried using the older fuel filter in a new styled filters placement?

Thanks, Hoppy.

is there a way to change fuel filter without special tools?

I looked under ther and I am unfamiliar with this Ford Interconnect setup.

What ever happened to hoseclamps and /or threaded filters? ahhh

No, there is no way to change the filter without the special tools. They are very cheap though. You can pick them up at any parts store. They are just little plastic clips that snap over the ends of the filter tubes and push into the lines to compress the spring back inside of the line. Then you just pull them apart. Very easy provided the fittings are not filled with rust or road dirt. Please be cautioned though. You have to depressurize the fuel system first or you can become a walking fire ball if you get sprayed with gasoline and get lit up.

Thanks.
