First off I have a 1992 Explorer Sport that I bought last summer as my first car, and there are two problems i need help with. One is that since I have had the car the fuel gauge has not worked, are there any common problems with this on the explorer and if so how should i go about fixing it. Secondly the truck will go into 4WD but not low range. I would just like some suggestions as to what can be the cause of that. All help is appreciated. Thank You.

Not trying to make you sound stupid, but did you make sure it was in neutral when you put it in 4-Lo? If that's not the problem, then do you have the push-button 4x4? Sometimes the transfer-case motor will freeze up and not let you shift into or out of 4-Lo. It might help if you let us know if it's manual/auto tranny and electronic/manual 4x4. I don't know much about the fuel gauge, but I believe it is not too difficult to fix.

Probably the fuel sending unit. You're best off getting a new one. Also, try tapping on the plexiglass to make the gauge move. Sometimes my voltage will fly up and get stuck and I have to tap to get the needle down.

You can unplug the electrical connector

at the tank for the pump and sender. The gauge should go to full after a time delay. If it does that the gauge is ok. Sender is 15 ohms empty and 170 ohms full. Wires are yellow/ white and black/ yellow. Color might be a littlr different but they will be the two small ones. If the gauge is on E it is likely due to a float that developed a leak. Supposidly these are $5 from Ford. It just snaps in. Unfortunantly you have to drop the tank to do it.

Thanks guys the help is appreciated. Also I know to put the truck in neutral. And it is a auto with the electronic transmission. but i found the problem anyway. thanks again guys.
