My wife's '93 XLT has a fuel gauge that sometimes works, but most of the time does not. When it does not work, the needle does move when the car is started, but towards empty. I know the fuel gauge sending unit is inside the gas tank, but I really don't want to pull the tank. Has anyone experienced this problem?

not an answer, but another question

My fuel gauge works fine until it gets down to the 1/4 mark. After that it either works good, works half the time, or goes all the way below the E. I never can tell how much gas I have below 1/4 tank. Kind of scary when you're driving down the highway and the check gage light comes on for low gas when you know you had 1/4 a tank 2 minutes ago. What should I check to fix this problem?

Hate to say it but it sounds like you both have fainling sending units. Check all connections (especially behind the dash) before dropping that tank. It's a real chore.

I had this problem but I got lucky. I back-handed the dash a couple times and it's worked fine since.

Way to go CH, show that gauge who's boss! Seriously though, CH was right, from my experiences the problem lies either in the dash connections or in the sending unit itself.

Victor: sounds like your sending unit is completely shot, or there's a really bad connection to the gauge.

Monkey boy: sounds like your fuel float just doesn't like to bend that way and it craps out below 1/4 tank. My solution: don't let it drop below a 1/4 tank ;)
