hi i have been having alot of problems with my explorer and i think i am narrowing down on it, when i have a buddy turn the key to the on position i can get fuel to spray out of the fuel pressure valve but when he cranks it i am not getting anything out of it? what could be causing this? also i rigged the fuel pump to say on and start it but that didnt work as well, the codes i pull are 114 and 116 these wouldnt make it not start?
thanks
ryan

I have a thread in the EEC-IV section with an explaination of the codes. This is what it says:
114
Intake Air Temperature/Air Charge Temperature Higher Or Lower Than Expected
O/R

116
Engine Coolant Temperature Higher Or Lower Than Expected
O/R

i know what those mean but would they be causing this? i thought these only poped up beacuse the engine is cold and hasent ran for about 2 weeks?
thanks
ryan

Have you checked what the actual fuel pressure is?

Fuel Pressure

absent a specific gauge....there isn't a generic method to check and at least see if there is pressure there is there? This I do hope is the last demon I have to contend with ..... My Girlfriend misses our Escape(and I liked that truck too)but the Sport I like alot more, more power, room, clearance to scare the crap out of those kids with the little cars that sound like dirtbikes.....I could never do that in my kia......

i have that but not the stupid schrader valve and one auto store has one in pullman.

sorry that didnt make sense, i have the kit but it did not come with the schrader adapter to test fords, and theres not a single auto store in pullman that carries the adapter

Same thing happened to me with my first compression tester. It didn't come with the right adaptor to fit my Explorer's spark plug holes. Ended up having to buy another compression tester that came with the correct adaptor.
My fuel pressure tester (think it was an Actron kit bought at Pep-Boys) came with the correct adaptor.

You could troubleshoot your ECT with the following chart:

ACT and ECT should not be required to run. I can pull them off mine, and it will throw a CEL. I put them back on and CEL goes out. It will just go to it's default and not respond to sensors. In fact, the EEC-IV does not use any sensors when starting (except for the CPS of course, and a BAP which is not on explorers).

As far as your fuel pump goes, I'm not sure how it will handle releasing fuel from the rail while cranking. It's dumping a lot of fuel into the injectors at that point, and there's probably not enough to spray out too. Assuming you do have it wired always on, I'm not sure what to tell you without seeing real pressures.

When I had a problem with my old fuel pump, I hooked a battery up to the connector next to the fuel tank, and the pump sounded locked, so I knew it was bad. You could try wiring it to 12V battery constantly fed while starting, and see what happens.

It wouldn't suprise me if fuel isn't a problem for you though.

You don't need the adapter just unscrew the shrader core from the fitting and hoseclamp your fuel gauge onto the fitting. Or if you want to me more thorough unscrew the whole fitting and screw your fue gauge into where the fitting goes.
