Fuel pump doesnt stop running

99 XLT V8 AWD
91 XLT 4wd auto trans.

When I shut the key off, the fuel pump continues to run. At first it was only for a couple seconds, then after doing that a couple times, it would continue to run and not stop. There is sufficient pressure at the rail, I can disconnect the fuel pump fuse and it stops running. If I plug it back in immediately, it will resume running. If I leave the fuse out for ~15 minutes or more, the fuel pump wont start running when I put the fuse in until I turn the key to the on position. Runs great any other time.

Thoughts?

I have a new regulator coming in the mail since I figured I would swap that while I was swapping in my new injectors. I had considered the possibility that that was the problem, but I am not too convinced about that since the fuel pump will stop running if power is removed long enough.

Relay? Strange to stick closed, even stranger to open only if power is removed from the switched side (not the switch side) for that long. Where is the relay located, under the engine fuse panel somewhere?

ECU? meh.... I have been doing my best to remake this truck into a new truck, but c'mon.

The relay is located in the engine compartment. There are about 6 identical relays, but one of them is for the fuel pump. They should be identified on the inside of the cover. I don't know for sure, but it seems like a relay sticking could cause that problem. Hopefully it's not your computer. Good luck!
 






As for the relay, you could swap that relaywith one of the others and see if the problem continues.. I would do that before you put new regulator on just to be sure.

Yeah, I'll get around to that tomorrow, hopefully I will be feeling better by then and the weather will be OK. I am going to change the regulator regardless, since I am swapping in new injectors and cleaning the intake manifold. Might as well do it while I am doing everything else.
 






Wasn't suggesting you not change it, only that if doing "all the above" corrects the problem you don't have a definite as to which one of the above tasks fixed it... I thought maybe swapping the relay first, or only if doing everything else didn't fix it would help in troubleshooting

Yeah, I gotcha, sorry about that, I understood what you were getting at. Sorry if what I was saying sounded contrary to that, I'm pretty sick today.

:edit Got antsy and checked it because my wife was complaining about the fact she had to pop the hood. Only 3 relays down there, none of them were interchangeable with the fuel pump relay(unless I cut off the guide tabs), but when I put the fuel pump relay back on, it started working correctly, so I guess the relay must be sticking.

Well good enough, I will pick up a new relay and I still dont have to get a reman ECU.
