99 sohc won't allows start on first crank. sometimes takes 3or4 tries before it starts.
Start engine fuel pressure jumps straight to 65psi
fuel pressure at idle 65psi
engine stopped fuel pressure drops to 10psi in 1 minute and to 0psi in 2 minutes.

Is the regulator bad or the fuel pump check valve bad?

Thanks Gene

I opt for Fuel Pressure Regulator. Fuel Specs from Haynes:

Fuel System Pressure at idle
Vaccum Hose Attached: 30-45 psi
Vacuum Hose Detached: 40-50 psi
Fuel System Hold Pressure (after 5 min): 30-40 psi
Fuel Pump Pressure (Max): 65 psi

Even if the check valve's bad, the fuel pressure regulator ain't regulating.

My 99 SOHC does not have a FPR.

I once had similar symptoms with the fuel pressure and resolved it with a new fuel pump.

Good luck ......

I guess that's another shortcoming for Haynes, it has 3 photos showing the FPRs on the OHV, the SOHC and the 5.0.
