I just had a harrowing experience last night. I live in Colombia and I purchased a 2001 Sport. I live in a different city than the the seller so, I had to make a 12 hour drive back to my home city. The car ran well for the first 5 hours as we navigated very rough roads. At hour 6, the "check engine"light came on and I began experiencing a loss of power and the engine would not keep running. I had to restart it and it was difficult. We limped into a small town where a mechanic with a monitor showed that the fuel pump was failing and the injectors needed cleaning. First he said that we couldn´t drive the rest of the trip, but, there was no pump to be had in the town and we were looking at a five day stay. He then did some fuel pressure checks - it read about 42-45 psi, and then said we could risk the trip. We drove another 7 hours with no problems. Sorry for the long story but, are there any opinions out there on what the problem could be? Should I believe this mechanic or are there different ways to interpret the codes?
