OK, the 91XLT has a bad fuel pump relay causing the pump to run all the time, unless you pull the fuse...The Chilton's shows a relay in the electrical schematics, but never
shows any locations...I'll have a chance to open the hood this weekend, but if anyone knows where the relays are..I'd appreciate the info.

The fuel pump relay is in the power distribution box under the hood. All the important engine relays are there together. However, I believe your problem is a bad fuel pressure regulator, since this is the EXACT same thing that happened to me. My 93 would not start, because the pump was running all the time and would not pressure up the system. My regulator was shot, which was allowing all the fuel to just run in a loop. Thus, the the pump would never shut off. If the relay were bad, the more normal response would be for the pump to not run at all. Occasionally a relay can stick open, but this is not common......... still, this would not cause the pump to run constantly. Regulators are a common problem. Your local Ford dealer keeps many on hand...... this shows the frequency of repair. Hope this was helpful.

Thx for the info..I remember that box...I don't drive the '91 so I did not have it handy to look at. The truck starts and runs ok..no problem there..the pump just keeps on running after you shut off the ignition! But, to be sure..where is the regulator? Not in the gas tank w/the pump I hope!!
Thx again.

the fuel pump relay is located underneath the power distribution box on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The relay sounds like it is stuck in the "on" position. I had the same thing happen to me after I crossed some deep water driving to fast. I guess the water shorted the fuel pump relay.

Gloria and slow-demon,

Thx for the info..got a chance to look at it this weekend and the relay was indeed sticking in the on position..interesting is,the relay circuit is "hot" all the time allowing the pump to run with the ignition off. Working now, but I'm replacing the relay
anyway.

Can anyone tell me which relay of the three in a '91 is the fuel pressure relay? The rearmost one is green, then brown, then the front one is black.
The middle one clicks when the key is turned forward, but neither of the other ones do.
and no noise from the fuel pump.

Thanks

I've been told the green relay is for the fuel pump. now i have a question for you......where are these relays? i cant find a green brown and black relay cluster together anywhere and i'm being told i need to replace the green one. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your attempt to help. howver, my 95 has the relays in the power distribution box. the relay clicks when i turn the key on. (and has been swapped with other relays) yet, the fuel pump continues to run the entire time the key is on and wont start. i've hit a brick wall because nobody can seem to diagnose this issue. thanks alot for the effort though.

......Actually, my effort was based for the 91 X in this post...Since i now see this is an old post and you have a 95, maybe a new post specific to your problem would help...:dunno:

...While we are here maybe I could help..Yes, your relay is in the box on top, drivers hand side under the hood..I would turn the key on without starting the truck and pull relays to see which one stops the whirring...Buy a new relay again and try that...

...There is a really good write up on this if you search fuel pump or the stickies in under the hood or tech section...It explains testing and tracing for fuel pump problems...;)

i pullud the relay while the fuel pump was running and it shut off. replaced it with another relay from the box of the same part # and it kicked back on.
