I am going to replace the fuel filter on my wifes 93 Ranger 4.0L. What is the proper way to relive the fuel system pressure so I don't get sprayed with gas? I am going to get the special tool to release the filter, but need info on depressurizing the system.

Thanks,

You'll need to find the fuel pump relay in the dist. box under the hood. Pull it and start the vehicle and let it run until it dies. Try starting it a few times. You'll be good to go then. I wasn't able to get mine out. $15 later someone else was covered in gas and I was going down the road with a fresh filter :D

Thanks for the reply. Do you, or anyone else, know which relay this is? Unfortunately, I don't have a manual for the truck and don't want to buy one as we are going to sell it soon. I just want to take as good care of it as I can while we do own it.

Thanks,

No idea then. Maybe you can PM someone with a 91-94. I do belive they're different. Sorry I can't help with that.

Locate the inertia switch aka fuel cut off switch (behind the glove box, under the carpet) on my '93 X. This is the fuel pump power cut off (triggered by impact). I just pull the wire connector off (which prevents power from reaching the pump). You then crank the engine for 15 secs or so and you'll have relieved the pressure. You should keep a small bucket handy as the lines will still contain some fuel (it just won't be under pressure).

Theirs to ways to do it. 1 pressing the inertia switch and to pressing the relef valve on the intake but ull have to find as im not in my dads books right now.
