Recently I got 230ish miles to a full tank of gas. This was with driving slow,I hardly brought it above 2,000 rpms, and brough it up to 1500 rpms. This is the most I have gotten out a full tank of gas. If I did the math the correctly that is around 12 mpg. That is good but I would like to get more. By the way this was only driving around town. Anything else I could do beside replaceing plugs and wires, cleaner mas, which have already been done?

Take a look at the following thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44372&highlight=quest+for

jar2187 - I get about 350 out of a tank on my 94 auto 4x4. I get more than what seems to be average around here, but I think yours is lower than average (considering you said you kept the RPMs real low). How many miles are on your truck?

230 is about what I get on my 93, but I usually fill up just after the needle falls below the 1/4 tank mark. I have done the math and I usually get between 13.5-14 in the city and around 17-18 on the highway.

I get about 550 Km on a tank in mine. That's about 340 miles for you guys south of the border. I have a 92 with 256,00 Km and a 5 speed with 3.26 gears. Even on the highway at 70 Mph I am only at 2600 rpm. Actually I just had a new exhaust installed with nothing but straight pipes and a muffler. I'm actually expecting better miles to the tankfull now.

I have 153000 miles on it, On the highway at 70 the rpms are at 2800, I think my overdrive is not working but that is another story.

I started getting about 220 a tank on my '91 XLT with 178,000 and my check engine light came on

changed the first O2 sensor no change

changed th ec? sensor on the intake manifold and milage went back to normal for about a week...then check engine light came back on and bad milage returned

changed the fuel presure regulator and problem solved...back to my normal 310 a tank

FPR cost about $125

if I had it to do over I would start with the FPR

I wish I'd known about this great site this last fall

Peace

On my stock 92 E.B. Sport 4x4, I consistently get 17 to 18 on my commute, and 20 to 21 on the highway, running 70 to 75. I'm trying to get my Mountaineer up there. I think my Apten chip mod will get me closer. To accurately check mileage, you must take miles driven and divide by gallons. Do this over several tanks at least.

i just came home from school(~200 miles) i filled the tank when i left and drained it to empty (with an extra gas can in my back) and i got 310 out of a full tank. i think this is amazing considering that i was in the 4000rpm range for an hour (about 100 miles) back home. my speedo needle hit the bottom of the gauge indicator and couldnt go anymore. my tranny was makin so much damn noise i was afraid i was gonna blow her[apart] apparently the rebuilders i went to did a hell of a job because it was over a year ago that i got it rebuilt, and i checked my fluid today after i got home and its still as pink as the day it was poured. [knock on wood] BTW speakin of my speedo gauge needle maxin out, does anyone know the true max speed of a first gen?

Thats amazing to me. I have a 97 SOHC with 4.10's and i get 300 - 325km on a full tank. The only mods that i have is a Mac intake. Also i have an apten chip on the way. I wonder why my milage sucks?

I have gone 105 with my 94, That was before any of my mods, someone was driving neer me to tell me my speed. With mods a 1st gen X should be able to go about 120 ish, but hey its an explorer lets keep it slow on the trail.

I thought the 1st gens had a governor on them that only lets them go up to 85 MPH.? I know that I read it somewhere.

my dad's 97 V8 AWD is getting 245mpg mixed city driving..i have been the main driver and i drive it HARD so if i took it easy ti would prolly do better

my mom's 94 will top out at about 115mph

Hi Jar! Ya myself and a few others around here got a few more MPGs now. I am sure that we are now on summer gas here in N.E. and that would account for the 2 MPG increase. That winter blend gas drops the 1st gen EXs mileage about 2 MPG.
I can notice the extra 50? more miles that I can go now. Maybe I might even start using it more now.:D

I get about 210 miles on a full tank city driving...highway ill get about 260 miles to the tank. Where would you get a FPR and where does the FPR on a 93 sport go?

The 1st generations top out at 95mph....did u all take the governor off?

If I just drive my 93 to work and back(about 1 mile side roads, the rest 60+ highway) and don't race too many people, I can get 280-310 miles on a full tank of gas. Average though is about 240-260 for me, and I like the skinny pedal once in a while.

no first gen's are NOT gov at 95..my mom's has done well past 100mph(nothing's moded)

Its was on a Ford spec site that I read that they are governed at 85 MPH. Maybe yours was disconnected before you got it.
