Engine noise

my 91 explorer w/ standard 4.0 has been making a clicking noise for sometime. very loud when cold. sometimes it just disappears while driving. suspect a lifter or two. engine has 110,000 miles and running great since day one. (except for antifreeze head leak which was repaired, I think the noise started then but ford dealer that did work refused to look into the problem).

Welcome to the boards.
The lifter tick is very common in the 4.0L engine and is something that some have come to live with, while others have repaired. IMHO, if the tick isn't driving you insane, live with it untill it becomes more significant.
