2005 Explorer XLT
Good morning all,
Please bear with me as I have been chasing down issues for a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. We purchased last fall for our almost 16 daughter. It's in INCREDIBLE condition, mileage was low, immaculate. It originated from Colorado, went to NY, back to Colorado, then we bought it in Oregon and moved to Alabama. I mention all this because of the potential of corrosion.

OK, so there were a couple minor issues, which we fixed immediately. Since getting it to Alabama, I have had the following:

P1450 code - which did you know the same code had thus far 4 different messages? We have replaced the canister purge valve, canister vent valve solenoid, fuel pump (first one failed that was replaced before we transversed the country). Replaced the fuel pump, BOTH evap canisters (didn't know there were 2) on top of the fuel tank, repaired an evap hose that had a small hole that may have caused all of the above. Phew, resolved the P1450 codes!

Shortly thereafter, we now have the "Check Gage" light coming on and low and behold the fuel gage and/or the oil gage needle drops. It can happen in any of these scenarios: at idle, coasting (slowing to a stop), during a drive. We notice most of the time it happens slowing or at idle. Primarily it will disappear when the gas pedal is gently touched but NOT always. Sometimes it's one gage, sometimes it's both. So, in research we replaced the instrument cluster and the replacement had MORE issues so we put the old one back in. Then we ordered a new PCM and put that in. There was an additional issue with ABS and the check gage issue still existed so the company let us return the PCM. They did a reprogram and we tried again, same issue existed with the gages, so they allowed a complete return.

This is where I'm stuck! Daughter turns 16 next week and we've been trying to fix this for literally months with all these steps. She can't take her drive test with dash lights on. I've tried everything I can find online. So here I am.

Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know what is wrong (bad ground)? Wiring issue? Where to begin? And for the record, BASIC BASIC vehicle knowledge. Thanks so much in advance! I'm tearing my hair out trying to get this car in great shape! I hate lights, that to me is a sign of problems and it needs to go away. :)

Tricia

Gauges can act funny with low voltage. As it mostly occurs at low speed/idle, it may be an alternator issue.

Try checking to see what your voltage is doing. Scan gauges like UltraGauge can do this.
