i am not sure if this can be done or not. last time i went to get gas, i noticed my cap was missing. i think it was stolen. my fiance's 2011 escape has a tank that doesn't need a cap. just open the door, fuel up, and close it. is it possible to modify the gas cap door to be just like that?

Probably not. The entire system was designed so excess vapors vent through the charcoal canister and back into the engine. Without a cap, you're messing with that system. I'd go buy a cap ASAP.

I would say it's possible, but how much money and effort would it take? Much easier to go buy another gas cap for <$10.

are there severe minuses to driving without a cap? my money is 100% gone right now. i hope i wont have any severe issues from driving a few miles for work.

They probably tossed the cap and stole your gas.

It is perfectly fine to drive without the cap for a short time. If I was you, I would just slap some duct tape over the hole to keep water out, and drive until you have money. A cap is just a few bucks, but I completely understand being broke.

Eventually, your gas will vaporize more, causing you to lose fuel. How much, will it be noticeable? I don't know. Yes, it's more of an environmental/emissions function but having a fully sealed system means no excess can evaporate.

Caps are cheap, get one. Don't bother with a locking cap, they only keep honest people honest and actually cause more hassle at the pump.

What he said, if you really don't have the cash right now. Throw some paper towels there and cover with duct tape. Did this on a lot of trucks at ServiceMaster

Thanks for all the advice. I couldn't have gotten luckier. I'm borrowing a gas cap right now. I plan on going out to the local PNP tomorrow since its free admission day, and try and get one to replace the one I'm borrowing.
