I want to put a locking gas cap on my '99 Sport. But I want to keep the plastic strap that holds the the factory cap on still intact. Can I remove the factory cap and slip a locking one on? Thanks in advance...

I don't know. You might want to check if ford offers a locking cap.

I've replaced my original with a locking cap and kept the strap. I think mine is a Stant cap. Check with any parts store (Advance, Auto-Zone, Napa, Pep-Boys, etc.) and they should be able to hook you up for $10 - 15.

Just got back from Autozone. They have one for $18.99. I don't wanna pay that much but I may have to. Advance Auto has a stant for $21.99 as well...

Hmm... Well, it was 3 years ago when I got mine so I'm sure I paid a lower price then. If you're looking for piece-of-mind, though, I'd say $20 is pretty good.

Agreed, for piece of mind, I changed my cap out for a locking one a week after I bought the thing!

Yeah I was about a week into my Ex as well before buying a locking cap.
In the big scheem of things, it is a worthy investment.

I have a Stant as well. Have you had any problems with the lock freezing in the winter? Mine does and it's a pain.

Once in a wile.
I just put my thumb on it and in a few seconds it works.

I recon one day they will have heated gas caps !!!!!

:)

Heated gas caps?! I doubt that, think of the risk of flamable fluids and heat....that's horrible! No offense, but I would never get one

explr1 and MON - I've not experienced the cap freezing yet, but then my area doesn't get as cold as yours (normally).

I agree about it being a pain to open in that small space and awkward lock. I have had others where there was more resistance in the lock mechanism so that you didn't need two hands to open it. That was on a Chevy though.

I emailed the ford parts network and they have one for almost $50 including shipping. I went back to Autozone to get that one but you cannot use the strap on it. the lady there told me I'd have to get one from Ford to use the strap...

Why won't the one from Autozone work with your strap? Just pull your old cap out of the strap loop and insert the new one. My Stant one did. The part number was #10502. I think it was $22.

Well, I went in Autozone asking for a locking gas cap for my truck. The man handed it to me. I asked him if I could take it outside to make sure it would work. He said sure. Well, the cap he gave me doesn't have the groove in it where the strap fits into. After I took it back inside the store the manager told me I'd have to get one from Ford because aftermarket caps won't allow you to use the strap. I'll check elsewhere because I really don't think those idiots know what they're talking about.

hmm... I'd try NAPA and see what they say. Most of their stores I've done business in have some pretty savvy people working behind the counter.

You do realise I was kidding right ?

I thought there was some sarcasm...but I'm sure some people actually would think it's a good idea.

Now I see. The Autozone cap is a one size fits all. The Stant cap has the groove ring in it for the strap. Theres got to be a store in your area that can get you one.
