Gas Gauge issues

I have a '05 Eddie Bauer Explorer this issue has happend a few times now. After fill up of the gas tank. The gauge (in the dash) only reads 1/4 tank. Also the electronic gauge (trip,fuel econ. milage) that also reads incorrect. I know 100% that the tank is full as I just filled it! Has this happened to anyone else or has anyone heard of this? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated!
Please help cause it is driving me nuts.Well mainly cause I bought the truck for the wife so it bugs her now she is worried.

It's a common problem with some Ford and Mercury vehicles. The only sure fix I have found is to remove the key from the ignition and keep the driver's door closed while fueling.

Is this a sarcastic reply? Actually the truth is there is a bad sending unit tha some 2002-2005 Explorers got. I just got this confirmed from Ford today. Part is on it's way to be installed at N/C this Friday. Thanks anyway for the laugh!

Birdman, He was not joking about taking the keys out and making sure your door is closed. Do a search here and you will find that there is a technical service bulletin that covers this very problem. If they have diagnosed you with a bad sending unit ok but don't be surprised if the problem is still there after the "fix".

They tossed a code reader on the truck today and that was waht came up. So fingers are crossed. Glad to hea it though now the wife can stop barkin' about it. Man it just happend last night jeeeze!Love the truck though!

They tossed a code reader on the truck today and that was waht came up. So fingers are crossed. Glad to hea it though now the wife can stop barkin' about it. Man it just happend last night jeeeze!Love the truck though!

what fixed the issue permanently on my Ex was a replacement of the sending unit and a new fuel pump.
prior to that, the stealership put some treatment due to sulfur contents they found....still had a problem.
and yes, leaving the key in the ignition while filling up does cause the problem,too.

Yes it sometimes updates slowly. Not a big deal it eventually gets up to full after a half hour or so.

I have been wondering for awhile and wasn't positive but my wife had her passenger's door open today while refueling and it didn't affect the gauge. So I guess it's just the driver's door and or the key left in the ignition.

This happened to my '05 EB a couple weeks ago between when I bought it and the next night when I was supposed to pick it up.

The salesman, who is a friend of mine, took it to fill the tank before I picked it up. When he got back in, the guage was still reading close to empty even though he just put in close to $40 of gas. He called to let me know that he was going to have one of his techs (bought it from a Ford dealership) look at it. They diagnosed a bad sending unit and replaced it before I even picked it up.
