gas guage acting up

I have a 2010 explorer xlt 4.0 4x4. The gas gauge is giving false readings. Last week tank was near full...all of a sudden it was reading below half. Next thing it's back to reading normal. Filled up yesterday... the wife drove about 90 miles... during that, the low fuel light came on and gauge was reading near E. This morning gauge was reading 1/4...drove about 8 miles and low fuel light came on. Its not leaking...i do not smell gas. its garage kept so i would smell it for sure. Any ideas what could cause this??

Dirty sender, try a can of techron.

My 2008 4.0 4X4 Eddie Bauer just recently started having the same issue. Did you ever figure out the issue?

I did, it took a few cans of cleaner over several tanks of gas. but, finally stopped acting up. I tried techron and another type of cleaner but cannot remember now what it was called. Good Luck Tanman91.
