Gas Gauge Question.

My X runs out of gas at 1/4 of a tank on the gas guage. Has this problem been discussed before? I'm contemplating whether or not it is the guage that is inaccurate or the pickup in the tank. I am hoping someone else has dealt with this before and can advise. Is there a replaceable sensor that may be bad?

Who's been through this before?

My 97 does this as well, I researched it a little bit on AllData, and found that it is a faluty sender, and was not recalled, but if you brought your truck into Ford for service before '98, it would be fixed.

Could be a bad connection

The sender is 170 ohms full and 15 ohms empty as measured on the y/w and bk/y wires. With some extra resistance in the line from the tank connector, the tank would show more than it has. Try pulling the connector at the tank and reconnecting it. I park on a hill and I don't let my 97 get anywhere near 1/4 or it will run dry. The 92 I can drive around on E and feel safe. They did have a bunch of floats that went bad but this just causes the gauge to read empty when full.

On my '96 I can go all the way into the Red before I have to fill it up. BUT I do notice that my guage will not always read the same. It will "waver" about 1/8 of a tank from day to day.

i.e. I'll drive to a store, the tank will read 1/2 tank, then I'll drive somewhere, and it'll raise to a little over 1/2 tank, then go to a little under 1/2 tank, all within a 20 mins time span. wierd...

As long as this is constant, just get gas before 1/4 tank and don't worry about it

Ford's guages just bite. The Taurus has NEVER worked correctly. I filled it up all the way and it read E ;) The fuel sender apparently has a hole and fills up with gasoline. Still doesn't explain why it will read full when it's almost empty.

My solution is to use the trip odometer, and fill up at about 250 miles or so. This way, I will have plenty of gas left over, but not have to fill up every day.

Look at it this way. On F-bodies, they have a "V" shaped gas tank. Imagine what happens when you are at 1/4 or less ;)
