i get around 17-19 on highway running at 70-75. i also have a 5spd with cat-back exhaust also and a kand n which hardly makes any difference.

To be honest with ya, there are quite a few threads listing other members MPG. If you do some searching, I am sure you will find a lot of info. And no, 16 mpg for a stock 4.0 OHV isn't that bad.

O im sorry but i just joined and my x isnt a ohv its a push rod

I get 22-24 in town and arround 30 on the highway.

99 4.9 SOHC.

Aldive, you've got to stop typing 4.9, you do that about half the time instead of 4.0

hate_tuners: the 4.0 OHV was offered 91-2000 in the X, the 4.0 SOHC 97+.

Oh, and I get 7-13 mpg city and 13-22 mpg highway. I know mine varies a lot, it all depends on how much I get into the boost ;)

Here's Aldives "My Quest For 30" (30 mpg): Dead Link Removed

That should tell you pretty much all you need to know.

OHV = pushrod V6

Your milage will depend on what type of driving you do, maintenance thats been done, your axle ratio etc. Is your Overdrive working?? Like everyone's said, there are lots of threads about who gets what and how to get better MPG. Using the search will give you lots of threads and plenty of reading.

Welcome to the site!

Have owned my '93 4.0 OHV sport 2WD for about a month.
~15 mpg around town, 19mpg @ 75 mph on trip last weekend.

Going full synthetic next oil change and an alignment next month.

my '93 5-speed does 14 city 16 highway (with 90k)
our '91 eb auto does about 16 and 22. (with 160k)

4.0 OHV came on all 91-94 Xs and Navajos (maybe even 95-96 too). the 4.0 SOHC was introd in the mid to late 90's ( i think 96) as was the V8 (5.0 i believe) in the X/Mounty

i get 11-13 MPG. that's about 210 miles to a tank. it sucks but oh well

I've been tracking my mileage since I bought my 97
Sohc 129,000 km truck, no mods and regular fluids
and my avg mileage over 2000 km is 14.9 mpg. I was
reading Al's thread where he is getting 30 mpg by
running his tires at 40 psi. Is anyone else running their
tires at that high of a pressure and realizing fuel savings?

The mileage is not simply because of tire pressure, its the combination of all the mods made.

Holy Cow Batman !!

Talk about instant reply, I realize that the fuel economy
you're getting is not just tire pressure but what would
you estimate the savings to be by increasing my pressure from 31psi to 40psi?

Thanks Al, I'll try increasing my pressure my tires say
max psi is 41 so I will boost to 38 psi and report back
on fuel savings in a week or two..

Be aware that running most tires at 38-40 psi on the street will make your ride much harsher, worsen handling and traction, and cause uneven and crappy tire wear.

I notice no difference in ride quakity at all.

And as far a ware goes, I have over 50k on my tires with hardly any apparant wear.

re:psi

ford only says 26-30 psi and my goodyears are not supposed to be run with anywhere near 35 or more...i usually run 28-30psi on 30x9.5 15s and we run 30 on the other explorer's 235-75-15s that are sears offbrand.
