I've done a search, and came across something kind of the same... the thread I read, he was overfilling, I think it was entitled "Expensive Gas Wasted"... well, mine is a little different...
This is my pattern when I get gas.
Turn car off, open gas door, take cap off, put gas in, close cap, close door, get in and go...
Sometimes though, I'll be able to actually afford to fill up the gas tank, and I used to be able to let it click, and then fill it up some more. I did it all the time in my old s-10 before i had the X, and never had a problem. When I got the Explorer, I would fill it to the first click, and a little more. That's when I realized that if I went past the click to stop, it would leak from underneath the Explorer. Now though, it won't stop on it's own, and if it does click, it's to late, adn about a gallon of gas is leaking onto the ground.
What did I break, lol? We have a junkyard here in town I can get anything I need to fix it...
Charcoal canister? (definition?)
