Well I went to mount my gas tank back up and got the straps in the framerail and the straps bolt together problem is they overlap by 10". When I dropped the tank the upper strap just fell down so I have no idea how it connects above the tank. I was certain it was higher but I just cant figure it out. Haynes and chiltons says nothing on it. I also know that the 2dr has one less strap than the 4 dr. So if anyone can tell me how the straps go back on I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Kurt,
I have a 4dr and there are 2 straps (front and rear) they don't come anywhere near each other... Both straps lock into the outer frame rail into their respective "T" slots. I have the Haynes manual in front of me and the front strap mounts in the frame rail and runs Above the tank. It its bolted to the bottom part of the skid shield. The rear hanger mounts in the frame rail and runs under the tank. It is bolted to a "U" nut on the frame above the tank.

Thanks man I knew I was overlooking something. I will go out and look for the upper nut. Is it a biatch getting the bolt on the lower skid plate to catch the nut on the upper strap???? Seems like it would be.

Here is my procedure for Installing the fuel tank. I wrote it up because you don't have a lot of room once the lines are connected.

Step by step Ford Explorer Fuel tank Re-installation guide

1) Install tank hangers into frame rail slots.
2) Evenly support the fuel tank with a floor jack and 12"x20"x1/2" piece of plywood. duct tape the plywood to the jack to keep it from moving around.
3) Inspect fuel lines for any sign of contaminants or defects. The garter springs inside the hose fitting should be symmetrical.
4) Raise tank enough to re-connect high pressure fuel lines, safety clips, and the evaporator hose.
5) Reconnect the fill hoses to the rear of the tank.
6) Raise the tank into position and install the rear hanger bolt.
Keep the hanger bolt hole flush against the mounting nut to prevent bolt damage from the hole cutting into the bolt as it is tightened.
Don't tighten any of the bolts in the following section until they have all been installed. This will give you enough play to easily align/install all bolts.
7) Evenly support the skid plate with a floor jack.
8) Position the rear Skid plate bracket over the leaf spring.
9) Install the front skid plate lip into its slot and install the driver's side bolt.
10) Install the bolt nearest the rear wheel.
11) Install the middle bolt.
12) Install the front hanger bolt.
13) Install the heat shield, its screw, and flange nuts.
14) Install the remaining front bolt.
15) Tighten all bolts.
16) Install the fuel fill neck.
17) Re-connect the electrical connection.

6) Raise the tank into position and install the rear hanger bolt.

Well its interesting that the 2dr only has a strap about 10" from the front hanger. No bolts in the rear as far as hangers go. After I dropped the skid plate all that was holding the tank up was one bolt in the strap and the front hanger.

Well I did just find the diagram in my haynes but it was saying for a 4dr. I was so focused on not know where the top strap went that I located the bottom strap in the same t-slot. I am now going to go look for the rear t-slot inside the frame. I looked outside the frame and found only the one t-slot and figured they both went into that slot and then bolted together.

Well that is what I get for thinking and not paying closer attantion to what I was doing.

CLOSE IT I'M DONE

Nifty.. I usually get burned when I take something apart, but get sidetracked for a few days (or longer) before I put it back together. I then scratch my head and wonder where in hell the parts went.. I now have a cheap $30 digital camera I use to take pics when I work on the X. It is well worth the instant feedback and beats the hell out of my chicken scratch drawings I used to make... I do have a nice digital camera, but Its much better having the cheapo thing right in the tool box.

Ok guys, i have a million dollar question for you (ok, I don't really have a million, but if someone can answer it right I'll.... uhm.. send them a cookie?)

Where can one BUY a gas tank strap for a 91 2 door??? Tank's is rusted to the point that it's about to break :( I work at a Ford dealer, the part is discontinued. And even if it weren't it'd still be $50!!, according to the computer about the last one we sold eons ago.

I tried FPN and Ebay, so far no luck. I can pull one off a junkyard wreck for probably $20 or less, but I don't want another rusty strap to replace the rusty strap i took off, ya know?

Help?
