On my 96 5.0 expo I thought at first my gas gauge was off. I parked a slight grade front of truck on the down hill side gas gauge reading 1/4 tank it sat overnight and wouldnt start the next day. I put like 2 gallons of gas I had in a can in it and it fired right up. Today after putting $25 in the tank parked it the same way sat for about 5 hours homage reading 3/4 tank wont start dumped a little less then 1 gallon of gas in the tank and it fired right up. Could the fuel pump be losing its prime? I dont see my gauge being that far off. And the hill its parked on isn't steep enough to allow the gas to flow away from the pump. I will add that one day it did this I coasted to the bottom of the hill to a flat spot turned the key and it fired right up.

Maybe the sump which is connected to the pump is loose, disconnected or is partially clogged.

Next time it doesn’t start, I’d try cycling the key more, or letting it sit for a short time, and try again.

Or, I’d back in, and see if it does the same thing. With 8 or do gallons in the tank incline should be irrelevant.

It’s possible your fuel pump is on its way out. They rarely fail all at once. How many miles?

Fuel pump failure. Amount of fuel and incline of vehicle would not matter. Don't park anywhere you would hate to be stuck.

Maybe switch out fuel filter now, as you should do this with pump replacement anyway, and there is remote chance it will help.

Ughhhh. I'm afraid my fuel pump might be going out too or that the filter is clogged in mine.

My driveway is fairly steep and last week when I had a trailer hooked to my Explorer, it was parked on the steep incline while the trailer was at the flat top of the driveway. I noticed that my fuel gauge was showing empty and tripping the gas warning light when I was parked like that but after a couple of miles the gauge would sweep up to 1/2 to 3/4 full. I've also noticed that since I got this thing running that sometimes it drags a little when trying to start it. I'm thinking that after sitting for four years a lot of crap settled out in the tank. I was actually just surprised it started on the 1/4 tank of fuel that had been left in it for four years!

The fuel pump isn’t that hard of a deal. If it’s suspect, I’d rather replace it on my terms and when there’s hardly any fuel in it than whenever it decides to entirely quit working.

Well the good thing is, with the abysmal fuel economy these 5.0 engines have, it'll be empty soon! LOL

You should add a bottle of Techron fuel cleaner to the system after you replace the pump & filter.
