Gonna try and change the gear box in my 92 Ex. Can't have it dumping as much fluid as it does in front of my customers homes.

So far in my cart I have the Reman Box and a puller. Have a 30% off coupon. Do I need anything else? Odd sized sockets and such? I want to be completely prepared. Haynes manual makes it sound pretty straight forward.

Cheers

Are you talking about the steering gear box? If so...

I don't know for sure on the Explorer but I changed the steering box recently on my Bronco, which actually uses the exact same steering box. I didn't need any special tools besides the puller. For the large nut holding the pitman arm, I think I used either a large socket or an adjustable wrench... nothing fancy. Removing the pitman arm from the splined shaft was the only challenge. I sprayed it liberally with PB "Penetrating Blaster" penetrating lubricant, let it soak, gave it a couple whacks with a hammer to relieve stress, and put the puller on. The notorious pitman arm just popped right off without issue.

When cycling fresh fluid through the new box, I drained my old fluid first, then removed the EEC relay (disabling fuel and spark) and cranked the engine to run the power steering pump and prime the system with fresh fluid. Worked great.

Awesome! Appreciate your input! I've been kicking around a the SAS option so the steering gear box is on hold since all new Heim steering is included. I would probably prefer just to just stabilize the TTB (I have a 2 inch lift that is somehow camber maxed), but it is just making more sense to me to change it all. Hoping to possibly save with a leaf sprung set - even more unique and first get lead sprung SAS
