Ok, so I have 3:55 open gears. What does the "open" part mean?

It means that one wheel can spin freely while sending no traction to the other wheel. It is not very good for traction, obviously. If you go over to howstuffworks.com and search for differential, they have an excellent write up on open, limited slip, and locked diffs.
