I think my truck would really benifit from swapping gears from the stock 3.73s to 4.10s....

the only problem i see is the AWD front end..... who makes a ring and pinion for the AWD front end and how much???

i think I remember getting a price from ford and they wanted $500+ for just the front ring and pinion.....

Just get gears from a standard rotation dana 35(like the jeep rearend) and you will be fine.

Ford is ridiculous. You can get them and probably the install kit for a third of that price.

standard rotation dana 35(like the jeep rearend)

and that will fit the AWD front end????

and I can use a standard 8.8 rear-end gear out of a mustang-

That is correct, sir.

ok- I found a set of 4.10 gears for sale for the FRONT of a '98 explorer...... they say the gears are "reverse cut" for the front differential.... Im guessing this is for a 4x4...

so it WILL or WILL work on my AWD front end???? anyone know???

Im guessing the 4x4 and AWD front gears are different??

I know nothing about reverse or regular cut gears or whatever, but I compared the picture to a set of gears I've got sitting here for my front end and the teeth are cut in the same direction.

I'm pretty sure the AWD and the 4x4 use the same axles. They look the same physically, and it would be pointless and not cost-efficient for Ford to put different kinds of gears in the AWDs than they do the 4x4s, so I'm pretty sure they are the same.

i think that too.... the difference between a 4x4 and an awd is that 4x4 is selectable wheras awd isnt.... and that is determined by a 2 speed transfercase or lack thereof

They probably will work, but they are wrong in saying that they are "reverse cut", they are actually standard cut.

thanks guys-

that should be true with ford using the 4x4 and AWD should be the same... I was just wondering cause when i ask the parts guy at ford he said the AWD front gearing was like $500 bucks-

pur pony - i would like to know how the install goes if u do decide to change gears. i too have the 3.73 gears with awd and i would liketo trade them out for 4.10 someimte. or i might go to 4.27 or 4.56 depending on the size of lift/tires i decide to go with

COOLCHRISCUSH - No problem. I talked to my friend yesterday and he said that he can set them all up for me. 4.10s in my truck would be great and i am planning on doing it soon

Did you ever swap the gears? I am interested in this.
I want to get the list of needed parts and then find someone to install them.
