anyone have any reccomended gearing for a 93' explorer sport planning on a 4inch suspension lift and 33's need a little help on planning the gearing

u may want to go with a 4.10 rear end and the very minimum/maximum i'd only go no higher than 4.56 with the rear on 33's.......this is actually what i'm planning on doing to mine also....the same thing ur doing.....good luck....and a locker never hurts.....say a POWERTrax....

But if you have an automatic, 4.10 will get ya by.

i use 32's and 4.56 gearing, gas mileage was better then before.

Lol... if your explorer is 4 wheel drive you may want to go with 4.10/4.56 front AND rear... not just the rear. You MUST re-gear both axles or you will tear them to pieces in 4 wheel drive. Just makin sure you knew! Good luck!

4.10 if you do much highway driving. I have 4.10 with 33's and a manual... in low range the clutch will hold it off-road on a grade/rocky spot no problem. Still get 18.5 mpg on the hwy and plenty of power.

now thats geared for power anyways if it was me i'd go for 4.56's regardless of tranny. though 4.10's and an auto will do ok but 4.10's and a manual wouldn't be the ideal combo imo. it would be like running 4.56's and 35's with a manual tranny and i can tell you right now that combo sucks offroad. or alteast imo

The 4.10:1 would give you basically the same overall gearing you have now (assuming you have 3.73:1 stock). No change in the speedo gear would be needed.

Going with the 4.56:1 would give you a bit better power taking off, which would be helpful with the heavier tires...you may even improve your gas mileage for speeds under 60 mph.

Cheap is a relative term... Try looking on flea-bay, or the classifieds sections on here or other RBV sites, of course no matter what, it's always buyer beware. You might be able to find some 4:10s or maybe 4:56s, but in my experience, those are hard to come by since so many people want them.

And are you going to have a shop set them up? Gotta figure that cost too if an outside source is involved. I picked up a complete 8.8 with the gears already installed for $300.00, and just swapped it in. Just gotta be patient and look around for the deals.

ebay is a place to look. sometimes u can find them pretty cheap sometimes u can find them cheaper elsewhere. just search on the internet. every time i've purchased gears i just check sights and find who has the best deal at that time. and who has free shipping or whatnot. factor it all in and find whats the best price.

An auto trany with 33s with 4.10s will yield the same perfomance as 3.73s and stock tires and slightly better performane than 3.27s with stock tires.

IMO I would get 4.10s if you do a fair amount of highway driving, low to moderate off-roading, tow trailers under 3,500 lbs, and don't plan on getting getting bigger tires.
I would get 4.56s if you do a mimimal amount of highway driving, a moderate+ off-roading, tow trailers greater than 3,500 lbs, or plan on getting tires larger than 33s.
I recently towed a 5,000 trailer and it took some effort to move it around (as in you definitely knew you had a trailer attached (braking was horrible))... It was a piece of cake towing a 3,000 lb trailer and I hardly knew it was back there)..

im just gunna tag onto this thread..im gunna be runnin 31 1050s on a 2/3in lift soon..what kinda gearing should i be looking at for mostly back country roads/city..some highway about 55-65mph..and light wheeling..donuts in a field, climbin small hills and creek crossings..thats bout all i do..kuz i got a cj-7 for real wheeling..thanks guys..

Those tires will be fine with 3.73s (you didn't say what current gear set your running)... But with 3.27s and 31x10.5s I'd wait to regear until driving with them (as the performace loss may be tolerable). I drove around with 3.27s and 33x12.5s for several months and performance was way off (especially on the highway). IMO it wouldn't be worth it to regear unless you can do it yourself or have a shop give you a good price.
