Here is the basic plan as some of you know i have just aquired a 1991 Explorer 4x4 but it has sick motor in basically running on 5 cylinders and i also have 1999 Explorer 2x4 that i am getting ready to get rid of in favor of the 4x4
and i thinking about taking both motors from both vehicles stripping them both to the basic longblocks and switching the longblocks and putting like all the 91 emission intake manifold exh manifolds sensors etc on the 99 motor and dropping it the 91.

has anybody else done this??????

It's definitely possible to do a complete swap, since you have a complete donor vehicle. You'll need to swap over almost everything from the '99though, including the ECU, wiring, sensors, etc. etc. The 4.0 changed a LOT from '91 to '99, and only a few things are interchangeable.

Bump, anyone else wanna chime in on this?

I put a 97 engine into a 95 truck, very similar

You can use any 4.0L block from 91-2001
You will want to park the 99 block next to the 91 block and transfer everything over starting with the lower intake and all accessories, then it will basically bolt in as long as they both use the same transmission.

meaning if the 99 is an auto and the 91 is a stick you will need a 99 style flywheel (in 97 they went to a 8 bolt crank)

whoo hoo! :bounce: guess i am lucky there both auto's hmmm looks like i might be doing some wrenching this weekend after all :hammer:

EDIT : just thought of this will the torque converter on the A4LD bolt up to the 99 flywheel?

thanks 410fortune.

You're in California. I'm no expert, but don't you have to deal with the C.A.R.B? If you put a 95 engine in don't you have to meet all of the 95 emission specs? In addition to the EEC computer, I think that you will have to carry over all of the 95 emission control equipment. Or, is it that you have to meet the emissions for the year of the vehicle, not the year of the engine?

Bob

they will check it for both...thats why i took my project X for a visual verification first to see if i needed to add anything to mine to get it to pass smog...but again, it's not like there is a flag on your truck that says different motor...i'm sure if the newer motor has more parts to verify than the 91 motor, they will notice and it might take some paperwork....jmo though...

I know what u guys are saying and the law around here is if u swap a motor like a v6 to v8 then the swap motor has to be the same model year or newer than the vehicle year but i am just swapping a 4.0 for a 4.0 so i can probally get away with it putting the 91 emissions on the 99 motor I doubt the smog slackers
are gonna really noticed it.

if you are putting a 99 engine into a 91 truck CA emissions will look for all 91 emissions equipment to be in tact

This means MAS, DIS, single 02 sensor, EGR valve, and cat converter

In CA it is my understanding that there is never a problem putting a new drivetrain into an older vehicle its the other way around that causes problems.

Yes the torque converter bolt patterns should be the same for both engines, but again you need to park both engines next to each other and use everything you need from the 91 on teh 99 block.

The 99 will have a cam position sensor, your 91 does not, you can either install the block off plate from the 91 or just leave the 99 sensor in place and skip wiring it up.

Have you considered also using the 99 computer and transmission in your 91?

there are many benefits to this if you go tthe extra mile and convert the 91 to OBD-II

yep the days of putting a 1965 289 sbf in a 1980 pinto and getting a smog exemption are gone

this is good to know.

well the 99 is 4x2 and the 91 is 4x4 and i don't know what would have to be changed to make the trans work with the t-case. the whole reason for this is I really want to get the 91 on the road ASAP but I kinda bucks down right now and the 99 is just sitting right now doing nothing but collecting dust at my sisters place.
once i get the swap done i plan putting the old motor back and selling the 99 as a mechanic special.

..

I dont think vehicles before 1984 or some year like that fall under the conversion rules even in CA do they?

I believe in CO you could still do a carbed V8 into a vehicle up to 1984 without issues

1973 back are exempt everything else has to be smogged so if u swap a motor swap (ie v6 to v8) then u have to take it to a referee station and have it certified.

the point i was trying to make only was you can't fool the computer...thats why you should do certain years, lol...otherwise, the computer and harness need to swap and your plugin....:D

he can use any year 4.0L OHV long block with his 91 computer, Ford made them until 2001

sounds like he don't have to swap anything  anyways cybergasm, what are you going to do with the 4x2??? have you thought about selling it for cash and a motor???

there is some swapping involved have to swap the intake manifolds (complete)
and any other sensor (like the cam position sensor 410Fortune mentioned)
maybe the exhaust manifolds accessory drives etc. whew this is going to be a long weekend trying to get this done by myself:rolleyes:
