Hello i need my explorer to be towed for ~50 miles. The towing companies want between $500-$1200 for the job. I wonder if i can tow the explorer myself if i rent and F150 or something else? Any help will be very appriciated. Thanks guys

My Explorer says to be flat bed towed. So I guess it would depend on if yours is 4wd, 2wd, or Advance Trac or other set up.

This is a good reason to belong to AAA. I have the premium membership and they will tow up to 100 miles at no charge. I would keep calling around, I think you should be able to get it for less than $500. Tell them you only have $200 and see what they say. In my experience, most things are negotiable.

Maybe you can join AAA and then have it towed.

My estimate for my area to rent a uhaul truck and auto trailer was $75 a day. $25 for the truck $50 for the trailer. Definitely beats 500-1200 lol. There website basically does everything for you including pick out the truck and trailer.

Ok great thank you. I'll do that it is only $130. Do you know for how long I've to wait to get my car towed after i got that membership?

I would check into this carefully, including the circumstances under which you can ask to have your truck towed. You live in a different state than I do and the policies may differ because of differences in regulations and such. I think that you should be able to join and then use the service as soon as you get your card. I also think that it doesn't matter why you need to be towed, but I would check on the particulars before shelling out the cash.

I think the membership is well worth it in any event but it would be nice to know that you will be covered for this particular situation in advance.

That’s insane, I paid a company $1300 for my parts Explorer, CA to PA. Usually if you have roadside they will tow up 100 miles.

Ya, rent a medium UHaul with the Car Carrier....or just the car carrier if you have access to a 3/4 ton or greater truck to pull it with.

Just a few thoughts. All 4 wheels on the ground. A manual transmission is yes. If it is an automatic, 2 wheel drive the answer is, also, yes. However, you will need to drop the rear of the driveshaft and wire it up so that it is out of suspension travel. Then, it can be towed. A 4WD is a little bit harder and I would reccomend checking the owners manual for information. If you go and rent a Uhaul rent a trailer and do not worry about it. Just take it out of gear to get it on the trailer. A dolly still has the same requirements as 4 wheels down. The Uhaul and trailer will still not cost as much as the tow.
On a "buddy tow, you need to be very careful and make sure of communication. THE TOWED VEHICLE MUST HAVE GOOD BRAKES. The driver of the towed vehicle will, except in emergencies, always be the brakes. The tow vehicle cannot brake without the tow strap becoming loose. Loose can cause problems and damage. Else of note, some states do not permit buddy tows check the laws first.

I don’t believe any states allow “buddy towing”. I surely wouldn’t try it for 50 miles.

Get a small/medium uhaul, and drag it behind.

Hey guys thanks a lot for a replies. I got a AAA membership for $130 and they will tow it, thats the easiest solution and i will moving soon so one less problem. And yes prices are exterme here in florida (everyone tries to rip people off I've lots of stories how those mechanic store chains tried to rip me off [ pep boys for example refused to change the breake pads because i said no to new rotors, estimate was $700])

One more thing, could anyone look at the engine i will get? Do you guys think that the engine is legit and how can i check if the head gasket, chains and guides were replaced? The engine comes with 6 months warranty. Ford Engine 4.0 SOHC

It was probably rebuilt with cheap (read junk) timing parts. They need to be factory. Unless they can furnish all receipts I wouldn’t even consider it.

Ok great thanks for your advice. So would you prefer a junkyard engine instead of this engine? I know my alternatives are carb but i don't want to sink too much money into the explorer (the transmission isn't the best too) so $1500 is pretty much the cut off otherwise i would buy another vehicle (even though i really like my explorer) and used car prices are dropping here right now.
Oh yes for that price he must have used aftermarket parts.
