Hey folks,

Today I saw what appeared to be a stock Eddie Bauer Explorer (95-97 model) running Dunlop a/t 265X75R16. Now if I'm not mistaken, but that is 31.6 inches, or the same size as 32 inch tires (Monst 32 inch tires are approximately equal to 31.5 or so). Now if am planning on asking the guy, but idf he can fit the equivalent of 32 inch tires on a stock Explorer, it is than possible to fit 33 inch tires after a 2 inch torsion lift, right? I'd like to hear what you all think, especially if you have or are planning to do the torsion lift.

I am 100% positive that the truck was stock, it wasn't sitting any higher other Explorers and the tires seemed somewhat squeezed inside the well, but they fit fine and cleared the fenders. Even at compression, I'm sure he doesn't really have much, if any, rubbing.

Hi Tim,

Your question is right in line with my plans. I have a '99 EB and have already done the trosion twist/shackle thing for a 1.5" lift. I am going up to the 265/75r16 as soon as I wear out my stock tires.

But that's as far as I will be able to go; at least for an EB. Notice that EBs have body fender molding that drops down vertically fairly far right behind the rear wheels. Larger tires will NOT fit without removing those fender pieces. If your Explorer is not an EB, I wouldn't be able to say. But on EBs, it's gonna take a LOT of lift to clear more tire in front of those body moldings. Also, compression isn't the limiting factor. Clearance of the larger and wider tire when turning the wheel full left or right is where the rub occurs first on EB fender moldings.

The Eddie Bauer I saw was running 265/75r15's (Equivalent of 32's) without a torsion lift. I fhe can run 32's without a lift (I'm sure he has some rubbing), than ideally, one could run 33's with the torsion lift. I didn't think this was possible, right?

You should be able to run 35's on the 4 inch Trailmaster Lift. Rick put the tires down as being approximately 32x11.5 inch tires, but if you do the math from metric to inches they are about 34.4 inches (295/75R17), more closely equal to the diameter of a 35 inch tire. You might even be able to go higher than that, we'll have to wait till the lift is out to truly know. Unfortunately it looks like us 95-97's are going to have to wait a lot longer.

I think that 33's with Trailmaster's new 4" lift for '98-up should work fine. The IFS has less suspension travel and the tire will not be stuffed as far into the wheel well as it would be with TTB. So, the rubbing on the fender that some people get with a 4" lift should not be a problem. However, like Gerald says, the width of the tire will be the determining factor.

Another option would be to take off the stock fender flares, hack out the fenders, stick the stock fender back on. With the right off-set wheel this would work pretty okay. If you are desperate enough to get a larger tire under your rig this is always an option.

The only way you could run 33's with such a small lift is if you only drove straight and slow on a perfectly smooth road.
