I know this topic has been brought up a ton of times, but I need some help with picking an exhaust system ( or just the muffler) for my Mountaineer with a 5.0 V8 ( just like a 4 door explorer). I want the exhaust to be deep and throaty when I get on the gas, but quite when I'm cruising around town. Can someone shed some light on these questions.

1. Will I get better or worse millage?

2. Is it better to go with a cat back system or just muffler?

3. If I go with just a muffler do I take off the factory silencer that they install after the factory muffler?

4. Any real HP gains?

5. WHY DOESN'T FLOWMASTER MAKE A 4-DOOR EXPLORER CAT BACK SYSTEM?????

Thanks guys for the help.

Well I am sure that you know that someone WILL tell you to do a search on this. But I will give you a quick rundown on what I know. I have the 4.0L V6 so keep that in mind.

1. Better gas mileage (if you can gain torque and keep the foot off the gas) I just installed a stainless Gibson Cat-Back system, and I think I gained a bit of MPG and some torque. Though it could be driving style now that I am thinking about it more.

2. Go with the Cat-Back system as you will want to upgrade your pipes aft of the muffler to about 3-3.5', you probably have about 2.5' stock.

3. HP gains I believe in conjunction with Torque gains will vary on the system you get. A complete "designed" for your truck system will have specs on that information. Mufflers are not as 'tuned' to your vehicle, though there are many which go custom from a muffler shop and love it and then there are people that will install a "system" themselves from a company like Borla, Gibson, Bassanni...

Go here to see what you can get.
Gibson Performance Exhaust
Borla Exhaust Explorer Express

Explorer Express has a lot of things for your truck to modify. You could potentially spend a lot..."Welcome to your new Obsession!"

Hope that helps...
