My friend has a 1986 Ford Ranger w/2.9L V6 no bells or whisles and is running into a problem with his selenoid getting hot after the truck has been running for awhile.

Selenoid has been replaced twice with a factory one, ground cable and all connections are good and clean, battery is new and everything is hooked up how it should be!

The problem is bad enough it is melting the wires attached to the selenoid.

The starter was replaced about a month ago, I'm thinking perhapes it could be causing a slight draw somewhere?

Any input would be nice and appreciated!

I'm not sure on this, but I would check the voltage regulator.

Well the only things hooked up to the starter solenoidd are the starter and the ignition. So since the starter was just replaced, start there, make sure the wiring to the starter is correct. Also check the ground strap to the engine, this is where the starter gets all its ground.

Could the solenoid be installed backwards? Is a + touching a - anywhere?? A short is the only time I have seen wiring/solenoids get hot.

If the wires are getting hot to the touch they have excessive resistance. Check them with an ohmmeter.
