Hey guys, just bought my explorer a couple of days ago, and I'm thinking about getting a cat back sometime down the road. After reading a lot on this forum and on the rest of the internet, I'm pretty sure that I want to go with a Gibson, the only thing is, I can't seem to find an audio clip. I would really appreciate it if someone who has the Gibson cat back could post a clip on here, or if someone could point me in the right direction. If someone has already posted it on here, I apologize, but I spent awhile searching the forum and I couldn't find one.

P.S. This forum rocks! Tons of quality info for a newb like me :D

My '01 Sport has a Gibson cat-back. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to record the sound with any quality. I haven't found any other sites with decent recordings of this exhaust either.

Yeah, that's the problem I've been having, nobody seems to have an audio clip of the Gibson on a 4.0. I've read that it basically sounds like stock, just a bit deeper, which is exactly what i want, but I'd kinda like to hear it first. You like yours Silver X?

I see some gibson exhaust videos but they are on a ranger but it is the 3.0 liter ones i dunno if you wanna hear it but i will post the link to some of them.

hope that would help ya.

i got single in and dual out 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport i love how it sounds.

eventually i wanna get true dual flowmasters on my 01 sport.

Thanks Sam! I feel like a tard, I never even thought to check youtube ha ha. This was what I was looking for. I doubt I'll go dual, but I'm sure they sound similar enough. The Flowmasters are nice, just a little too loud and constant for my tastes, but to each his own.

I have the Gibson on my Sport as well. I have videos somewhere on my computer. I'll see if I can find them. If not I'll make some this weekend for you if you would like.

When I have a customer who wants an exhaust with minimal noise and drone I always recommend Gibson. Have you determined where you are purchasing from? I may be able to match or beat the pricing.-j

03ExplorerSPT: Yeah if you could post a clip of your exhaust that would be awesome thanks

jah81592: I've only just gotten the car so I haven't been really checking prices, mainly just having fun finding all the aftermarket stuff i want to buy :D, but my first purchases will for sure be a cat-back and intake, so when I am ready to buy, I'll definitely contact you.

yeah youtube has videos on there one of my friends introduced me to youtube it was long long time ago when he introduced me to it. Well good luck on getting an exhaust and no problem on finding the vids for you.

Sweeeeeet, now I definitely want it ha ha. Thanks man.

Gibson Exhaust on 4.0

My Gibson Experience:
I was looking for the best performance with the least increase in 'noise'. I went with James' recommendation of Gibson headers and catback on my '99 4.0 XLT. The header's (arrived and installed first) are awesome and a noticeable increase in power. The catback was equally impressive in performance. (together taking 0.7 sec off my 0-60) The sound tone was awesome around town. However, the freeway drone of the exhaust above 65 mph was horribly annoying! Even with dynamat all over the back I would get a headache driving any more than 2 hours. Perhaps the headers contributed to this, but I would never recommend this setup for anyone who wants a performance exhaust without resonance. I tried a resonator and both Borla and Dynomax mufflers on the Gibson pipes, but sadly ended up with the stock muffler on the Gibson pipes for the best performance without the annoyance at freeway speeds. Could be the way Gibson merged the two pipes or something else that caused the drone, but it was terrible on the freeway.
