Dear Folks,

I'm running out of gumption but want to try all avenues before I junk the beast (94 Explorer XLT) although I would rather not as I have enjoyed the ride... til now anyway.

SYMPTOM(s):

Coming down long hill (not sure if 'long hill' is significant but almost seems a common denom. when things go awry) in cruise and at bottom I lose power to the wheels, in all gears. Grinds a bit when putting back onto P.

Cost: $225 towing bill.

Have transmission replaced (??) at junk yard with transmission that is purportedly fairly new off Explorer with 'other' problems.

Cost: $1200 replacement fee. Seems to work OK.

For a bit anyways. A few days later going down another highway hill I lose power to the wheels and coast approx. 10ks to bottom near town. Pull over and try again (just in case) and, lo, seems to be working. Maybe I'm just imagining things.

Cost: confidence.

Dad borrows Explorere to drive his grandson to a park across town. Loses power to the wheels half way there and has beast towed to Transmission place.

Cost: $100 and a day without his grandson.

Transmission place says that it seems to work fine, they can't find anything wrong with it.

Cost: $140 diagnostic fee and faith in 'experts'.

Drive it home and lose power to the wheels about two blocks from home. Tow it with a rope.

Cost: dignity (?? lol)

Start it in driveway a few days later and it works. Decide to risk it and run to corner store to get some milk. Lose power to the wheels 1.5 blocks from home. Tow home with rope.

Cost: frustration elevation and enthusiasm chasm

Works, then it doesn't work, then it sits, then it works again (repeat, repeat, ...)

Sigh,

Any ideas?

Best regards,

Good site,

Bryan.

Lose power to the wheels = Engine rev's to redline, truck does not go?

94 4.0L A4LD automatic 2wd or 4x4? this could be as simple as the truck is slipping into N or as bad as your trans is toast again
If the engine loses power too we are looking at fuel/electrical problems

Welcome to the site, my 94 had issues with the shift linkage which I think contributed to the final failure of my transmission...partially my fault.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, they definitely don't sound normal, especially after getting a new transmission installed.

Q. "Lose power to the wheels = Engine rev's (up) to redline, truck does not go?"

A. Yes in all and any gear. Then wait, up to a day, and truck seems fine again, til it happens again.

94 4.0L A4LD automatic 4x4 and engine runs great.

Linkage was rebuilt with tranny replacement.

One possible scenario that a friend came up with that I am not skilled enough to comment on: Someone replaced the tran filter yet mistakenly left the old gasket (o ring?) in, in effect now having 2. When tranny is not level, i.e., going downhill, filter will now only suck air resulting in slippage. Then when stopped over time fluid returns from converter allowing a Go situation again. He suggested putting an excess of fluid in to combat situation but I heard that could cause problems of its own, as level right now is where dip says it should be.

One problem I have with this scenario too is that would then mean I got ripped off $1200 when junkyard buddy found that tranny worked (now) so didn't replace yet charged me anyway.

Thanks so much for being there.

If the o-ring wasn't installed with the new filter you might get this type of problem... seems to me I remember Brooklyn Bay saying something about a possible transfer case problem causing this in someone else's Ex. I might have that wrong but hopefully BB will comment...

I hope so too.

:)

(bump diguised as comment)

run 1 additional quart of ATF and see if it still occurs

Or drop your trans pan and check the filter yourself... it does indeed sound like the trans is scavenging for fluid, sucking air.... I would get a new pan gasket and trans filter. Get 5-6 quarts of new fluid.

Drop the pan, let it drain, replace filter, replace gasket and pan, fill to the proper level and see if it re-occurs

odd that it does the same thing with two different transmissions????
