god gave me snow.. tires failed.

my fiance had a scary drive home from work today, and it got me thinkin. twice i have avoided catastrophic accidents in the snow/ice, and it was bc i was able to regain control of my vehicle during inclimate weather. what tires were on the vehicles? BFG All-Terrain T/A KOs. same set actually.. and both incidents were on the same stretch of road. superstitious or not, this is one more reason why im sticking the the BFGs (when i have the extra cash of course).

Dont forget about ice, most the time in the winter most of the problums i seen is the tires that dont have sipes dont grip the ice as well. You can have the best tire for snow but make sure its ganna grip ice fairly well too. if its legal I would get a pair for summer and winter and stud the winter tires. I have heard the arguement that soem tires dont need studs but i have seen first hand tires that are not studded compared to ones that are and trust me if you can afford it get your winter tires studded.

Dont forget that Snow is not the only thing you have to deal with in winter. 8 out of 10 accidents in winter in snowy states are from cars sliding on ice.

well i know its been a while since i posted this thread, and although i planned on buying new tires with my tax refund i decided to pay off some small debts i had so new tires are gonna have to wait.

i am glad to say though that i picked up a very nice set of used cooper discoverer LTs with half tread, 32x11.50r15s for $38.63 (traded 2 GM heater cores for them) from a friend who wasnt using them. i have been impressed so far this winter with the cooper discoverer ATRs i have on my 97 (that i got for free with 10K miles on them) so i said why not and picked up these 32s. i ultimately will be purchasing the tires i want.. 33x10.50 TA K/Os, but for now or until i can gather up some extra cash, these will have to do.

ive read some reviews on the coopers and they seem to be a decent on/off road light truck tire, which is all i really need them for. anyone have any experience with these tires?

I got BFG M/T's on my 04 mountaineer.

They are AWESOME in snow, rain, sand and mud.

We just got over 10inches of snow here in jersey.

I was leavin people in the dust.....err snow, lol.

Everytime i intentionally fishtail, it just Catches and stops me from swaying.
(i know partially that's because of the AWD system, but i can FEEL the tire just dig down and catch)

The problem is, if you go into REALLY deep snow, they tend to just DIG DOWN more and more, and you can bottom out really quickly.

They never stop clawing though...

I keep hearing how M/T's suck in the sand and rain.....i TOTALLY beg to differ.
I can drive like a complete maniac in the pouring rain, and they just Claw to the ground and I NEVER fishtail, almost no matter how hard i try.

Maybe it's the independant suspension in the 3rd gens....but i will NEVER buy another truck tire other than M/T's

The wear on the highway is Really slow compared to other mud tires.

I've burned out tires quicker in my mustang than my SUV.

If it`s not too late I have to put my vote on the BFG All-Terrain T/A KOs

I started with my Ex way back when by getting 31 inch in this tire and was quite happy, then I went to 33inch Mud Terrains and found then to be inferior in the snow by comparison, especially snow on pavement. Snow on the trails wasn't so bad, as long as I could bite through it to the dirt/rock.
I have 35 inch now in a Goodyear Mud, but don't drive the ex much in the winter nowadays anyway.

We lobbied at work to be able to run AT KOs on our work truck 1 ton 4x4s after using cheap all-terrains of various brands for many years. I`ve driven between Vancouver and Alberta on them for 3 years through some hairy weather and they are just a great A/T tire.
