I was wondering, if these are good speakers (im on a budget and they come with free harnesses :) ):

(Crutchfield)
Polk GXR57

i dont care if they are like the best speakers out there, but i really just want speakers that are atleast much better then my ultra stock ford speakers, and can atleast rival the speakers in my 97 expedition E.B.

I drive a '98 4door Explorer XLT, and just want to change the speakers and keep my head unit intact. all i would need to do a simple speaker mod, is the 4 new speakers and the wiring harness (to make my life easier) and thats all right?

Jensen 3 ways are 35-40 a pair at walmart. You'll have to cut and splice on 2 connectors per speaker, but it's not a big deal at all. Actually if I remember correctly they come with wire with the ends already on, you just cut your stock speaker wire and splice on the new wire end lengths.

im sorry, but what does the 3 way mean? ill look into them, but how is the sound quality of these speakers? and which two wires do i cut per speaker?

3 way means they have a cone, a midband and a tweeter. You just cut the ends of the stock wires and splice the new wires to them.

i never looked at the stock wires, but i just have an image in my head, that the stock wiring consists of alot of wires put together, or am i wrong?

There is only 2 wires going to each speaker. A pos and a neg. Just cut the ends of them and splice the new wires to them. Then the new wires will have the connections for the speakers already on them.

I was looking for the same thing. I like crutchfield since installing them is pretty much plug and play. I however went with Pioneer 3'ways from wally world. I think they were on sale 60$ a pair. No they are deffinitly not the greatest but i'm really happy with them, alittle soldering and I was in busness. I'm happy with mine. And they are worlds better than the old (rotted) stockers.

www.crutchfield.com is a nice place. I got my pioneer 4 ways from them and im very happy with them. They will send the instructions to install the speakers and the wiring kit. Its very easy.

I have never look at the wires on my speakers but I can assume that they are color coded. Now hopefully all the negative wires have the same color, and then you'll know which one goes were by looking at it. If not then it might be better to go with the plug and play from crutchfield.

but i mean, why would speakers, even the stock speakers need more then two wires (the red and black or pos and neg)?

They dont need more. And there probably not black and red.

They don't.

He is thinking about it from behind the radio and not a the speaker.
Remember that when a person dont know, its best they say they dont and get help rather than doing something wrong and having to pay for it.

so what your saying is, the stock ford explorer wiring is just pos and neg? nothing else goes to the stock speakers, just the pos and neg, but rather its all put together into a wiring harness so you just plug the stock wiring into the stock speakers for easy installation? and all i would have to do, if i wanted to get new speakers, is just cut off the wire harness part thats connected to the stock wiring and solder the stock wiring to the speakers new wiring, and ill be done?

If you use the "What Fits My Vehicle" function of the Crutchfield site, when you put the speakers in your shopping cart, they will automatically add a pair of wiring harness adapters for the speakers that you ordered at no additional charge. The end that hooks to your new speaker will have two different width female connectors to match the different width male connectors on the new speaker. (The "-" terminal on the new speaker will be a narrower width than the "+" terminal on the new speaker.) The other end of the wiring harness adapter will have a plastic connector that will match up to your stock wiring connector on the old, stock speaker. (This assumes that no one else has already gone in there and cut the wires when previously installing an aftermarket speaker.) Using the speaker wiring adapter(s) that Crutchfield sends with your new pair of speakers eliminates having to try to figure out which wire is "+" and which wire is "-" in the factory wiring.

BTW, I've heard those Polk GXR57 speakers and while they are not the top of the line, as a true coaxial, they are far superior to the stock "premium" speaker with whizzer cone. Your stock head unit will power them just fine and you should notice a large improvement over the stock speakers, especially in the bass and the highs more so than the mids.

That is correct. The adapter makes the wiring of the new speakers pretty foolproof. When you give your vehicle information to see what speakers will fit without modification, when you add those speakers to your shopping cart, the wiring adapter and instruction sheet will be added automatically at no extra charge. If you call their 800-number, their tech guys will be glad to help. Crutchfield can be pricey on some things but their customer service and tech support is top notch.

Good luck.

ok now, do you think its worth my while to just spend the $10 more and go with the Sony XS-W5721, and does the 3way show alot of difference in sound quality compared to the 2ways? these sony speakers look pretty dam good to me, or should i go with the polk's or the Kenwood KFC-5708C ?

thanks for helping me out this much guys!

On an otherwise stock system 3ways should sound better than 2ways.
