if you are gunna put them into an otherwise stock system like alec said..yah go for the 3ways at walmart u will like the sound =)

ok well, now i need to know which speakers from walmart to get, is there a link to them? and also, do you recommend i spend my money on the harness or just splice the wires and solder them?

uh..i think the lightning audio speakers are the ones ur gunna want seems to be the general consensis

and if it were me and i knew whick wires was pos and neg id splice and solder but im somewhat mechanicly inclinde..like tim allen =-) i may blow it up but it worked for 30 secconds so u might want to get a 2nd opinion =)

like alec =) hes a good guy he can get u going straight ot expo or boomin alot of good people here

They don't have them at Walmart.com, but you can't miss 'em. Jensen 3 way 6x8s, should be around $40.

FYI Walmart (at least the one down here) has a Pioneer HU, 2 6x9's, and 2 6.5's for 100$. If anyone is looking for a starter setup on a budget, might wanna check it out

dam, i might just look for some good 3ways online if i cant find em at a walmart here. btw, what does the 3way mean? its like a tweeter, sub and something else all in one right?

ok im sorry for asking all these questions, but im just very poor, and hate creating more problems...

well, i was looking online for some more speakers, and it looks like ill just be going with the jensens at walmart if i find them, but i was at circuitcity.com and was wondering, to you guys, which one looks like they fit the 98 explorer wiring:

If you're too lazy to splice 2 wires per speaker.

3 way means there are actually 3 speakers in that assembly. This give you a wider range of sound from the same package.

nah, its not that im lazy, i just dont want to splice the wires because i might sell the car at any given moment. and if thats the case, i want to throw in the stock speakers quickly and easily. not to mention i could then throw these speakers into the expedition and do the same thing when i sell that aswell. my dad sells cars for like a hobby, and you never know when someone may want it, and i just want to do a easy install and uninstall when the time comes.

i also dont like cutting wires, i screw up the simplest things.

Now that makes sense ;)

yes, i found that alot of the "e-z fit" speakers at crutchfield will definately work on newer explorers, so im keeping myself safe just in case i get a new ex, and ill have new speakers to go with it aswell. :)

These woould work nicely, and are on sale for $39.99!!

those are good, but everyone here made me very very interested in getting 3ways now...

Snair2,

Do yourself a favor and go see if you can listen to the speakers in person at a local store. Just because a speaker is a 3-way doesn't necessarily mean it's better than a 2-way. Your ears should be the judge. Use other people's opinions as a guide, but let your ears make the ultimate decision. If you think the 3-way is better then go for it, but that might not be the case. Speakers are such a subjective thing (just look at all the varying opinions you get here) that you really owe it to yourself to have a listen. When you go, make sure you set the tone controls on the head unit flat - that way when you switch between speakers, you're hearing what the speaker sounds like and not so much the electronics.

By the way, to answer your original question, Polk Audio generally makes good speakers and I think the same would hold true for these.

ewf:

you bring up a VERY good point. i will goto the local car stores and electronic stores and check out some speakers. i was also thinking the same as you, if i get a really good brand name 2way, versus a cheap 3way, im pretty sure the 2way will definately sound better -- qualitywise that is. all i care for, is the crisp sound, not really into the whole bass thumping idea, more of a good sounding type of guy that i am.

i just hate the way my stock speakers sound, especially when i compare them to my eddie bauer system in my expedition...

The type of music you listen to the most makes a difference also. For example (from my experience with 2-ways to 4-ways) hard rock wont sound as good with a 2-way as it would with a 3-way. If you listen to hiphop or pop the 2-way will work fine. The difference is a 2-way doesnt have a mid band.

Lack of a dedicated midRANGE driver shouldn't be confused with lack of a midBAND. In a two-way speaker, the midband frequencies are played by the woofer. How well it does this is dependent upon the design, such as the materials used and the crossover frequencies chosen. With today's advanced materials, there is really no reason that a two-way speaker can't sound as good as a three-way speaker. It just depends. While it's true that adding a midrange driver to a speaker allows each driver to operate in a range of frequencies that is more appropriate for each driver, we should keep in mind that the woofer in this type of speaker is really just a mid-bass driver. It's not like we're trying to use a 15" subwoofer to play the treble or a 1" tweeter to use as a subwoofer. Asking a 5X7 or 6X9 driver to play midrange frequencies should be no sweat for it. Adding an extra driver and the necessary frequency dividing network for it can also create phase anomalies if not designed properly and you would figure that an inexpensive speaker design is probably where you would be more likely to see such a problem.
