About 60-70% of my driving is Highway and the rest will be in dirt roads and a lot of snow driving in the winter. What are a good tire size and pattern for this? I have the stock 4.0L V6 with a stick, no lift. I need something that is going to get me to the ski slopes but also be decent on the freeway. Right now I have P235/75R15 M/S tires. I know they are rated for mud and snow but they aren’t far from being bald. I really have no interest in anything bigger than 29 or 30 inch tires. Thanks for any suggestions.

i personally think they are very overpriced, but they are good... michelin ltx m/s tires

BFG all terrains is a very good tire also.

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo or BF Goodrich All Terain T/A KO. Both have taking me, my son and friends hunting up North on snowy, rainy and dry highways and 2-3 miles into the woods on dirt roads to go hunting.
Check them and other tires out at www.tirerack.com Read all the reviews on each tire.
Just type your tire size in or search by year and model. I will be putting new tires on my 92 EX (235-75-15) before winter. My choice between the 2? I still can't make up my mind but I am leaning towards the BF Goodrichs because they seem to be a little better in off road conditions and because of their warranty that if you get stuck on or off road in snow or mud they will send a tow truck to get you out! But NOT where the tow truck driver deems unsafe or undriveable conditions. The Revos are definetly better on high way driving.
At tirerack the Revos are rated # 1 in off road all terain but thats debateable to me because the ratings do not include any mud or off road driving.

Good luck at actually trying to get a tow from BFG. The ATKO's are ver good in the snow, and are capable as an AT can be on ice. They aren't a mud tire by any strech, and to get through any deep mud, you really have to keep them moving or they'll ball up.

I used to have 30" Perrilli Scorpions, and now have 31: BFG AT KO. The Scorpions weren't as noisy on the road, and were comparable to the BFGs offroad in Colorado and Moab. On wet rainy streets it was hard to spin the scorpions and its hard to get much traction with the BFG AT. On the snow in Aspen and sheet ice in Dallas the BFGs aren't in the same class as the scorpions, and it isn't close at all.

Any all season tire with good siping will do the job. I recommend the BF Goodrich AT's

I'm getting the Bridgestone Revos. The reviews compared the BF Goodrich ATs were much better. Also the BF Goodrich KOs didn't seem to be as good of an all around tire. Check out TireRack and compare the two. Many people on the board like the ATs and KOs but only because not many people tried the Revos. Do a search for Revos and you can see the people here who use them love them - more so than the BF Goodrich tires.

I just can't bring myself to put Firestones on an Explorer.

Lets not forget that the poster said that he will be driving 60% to 70% ON the highway. Yes i'm sure there are many better tires strictly for mud, rocks, snow Etc. but they will not be the best all around tires either.
Out of the 10+ tire forums I visit across the world the one thing that they all agree on is that the Revos are one of the best all around tires. They are made by Bridgestone. For off road the Firestone Destination M/Ts come up a lot along with some other brands. The 2 tires that I mentioned are tires that I have had experience with either on my trucks or in other trucks that I have been in.
But hey! I know that they may just have been good on Fords because thats mostly all we have taken up north and off road and these were not what I consider off road trucks even tho 2 of the Fords I have been in say "off road" on them.

Try this!

Put some Firestones on your Explorer and go to U Haul and ask to rent a trailer!

Did they live up to the hype? I'm probably gonna get a set this week.

Thanks for the help, sounds like those revos will definitely be one of my choices before winter hits. Anybody recommend a similar tire from Les Schwab (I love their service and guarantee.) I read good reviews from tiretrack.com (awesome site, very useful).

i have about 17 miles on them so far, lol so i cant really say anything st sll, lol

I run the Michelin LTX/MS. Lots of siping Pretty good in snow, though I've been able to spin them on wet roads if I wasn't careful.

Check out the newer Michelin "cros terrain". They may actually be better than the MS. Michelin told me that the MS tread is better on wet or snowy roads than the LTX/AT (All Terrain).

I just ordered my Revos from Sears. They price matched plus 10% of the difference so my total with tax (8.75%) was $605 mounted / balanced / stemmed. Originally they wanted $827! That was about the lowest price I could get. The tires had to be ordered so I'm hoping to have them by the weekend.

What size are yours? I have 255/70/16.

The Costco over here in Staten Island got me for $600.88. Lucky me bought them while Bridgestone was offering a $50 rebate for a set of four. So when I get the rebate check in a few weeks they will have only cost me $550.88 :D I can't complain that much.

Yes, I've got the 255s. Costco was actually cheaper ($591 after tax) but I don't have a membership (my g/f does) and I wasn't crazy about how long it takes to get them mounted there (on my g/f's RX330 it took about 4 hours). Not that I'm that crazy about Sears but I didn't like the experiance at Costco. Same tire, so if it was more than $15 cheaper I would have gotten it done at Costco.

The rebate is good until September 25th so I'm looking forward to the -$50 of the total price :D. That is if they ever send it - I'm still waiting for my $25 from Gabriel for my 4 VST shocks purchase in July
