I need tires at 172k and dont want to put a whole lot of money into this rig. Anyone happy with the GY Wranglers (not RTs)? Walmart has Wranglers for $59 ea.

What's the next best alternative say for an additional $10 a tire? Snow and ice are not an issue to navigate in my neck of the woods.

I've never had a Goodyear tire I liked. I would go with the Liberator tire Wal-Mart has. It is made by Uniroyal. Should be close to the Goodyear price.

they are a great tire i think especially for only 60 bucks (they were only 50 what i bought them for my moms explorer) i like the tread pattern, they did excellent last winter. i was going to get a set for mine but since im getting bigger wheels ill have to get a bigger tire. i like em and if they still have them when i need a new set ill be getting them again.....

I got uniroyal liberator AT's....they are comprable price and they have been great to me.....idk if wally worlf still carries them still though.

Wallymart Goodyear Wranglers = NEA

I bought the Wall Mart GY Wrangler Radials and after 1 week I have to say they are smoother and better handling that the Cooper Discovery HT's they replaced. I will rotate every 5k to prevent any uneven wear.

I have had the following tires on an explorer:
Michelin LTX MS: the best, got 70k out of them
GY Wrangler RTS: The loudest, probably didnt rotate frequently enough
Firestone Wilderness: The worst all around but got a free set of Michelins out of them during the Ford Firestone finger pointing
Cooper Discovery HT: Wore the quickest and worst ride
GY Wrangler Radials (current tire): So far so good, we will see

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I have to replace my tires as I'm running on a spare due to a ruined RT/S. Its the same set as the ones from the 2001 recall. Anyways I'm saving for the Wrangler silent Armours as I've heard they're one of the best all around A/T tires out there. Anyone here have them or know much about them?

Wtf?

I just put a set of the Wranglers on my work truck, yesterday. The ride is nice and they don't make much road noise. The tread pattern seems to be good enough for light snow, but we'll see about that this winter.

After having these tires for 4k miles I am still happy with the purchase. It finally rained here and the tires handled just fine in 3 straight days of rain. I can now recommend these tires. For the money you cant beat them. No road noise to complain about.

Huge nay. On Explorer front ends, GYs + weaker shocks = horrendous cupping. I trashed mine at about 35,000 miles and replaced them with 275/70 R16 Bridgestone Dueller AT REVOs (and also put on Rancho RSXs).

haha, i was just gonna say that mine where cupped pretty bad, rotated them to the back, we'll see how long before they cup again.....

Okay, that's a new term for me, what is cupping?

They are terrible. As the get older they get quite a bit noisy. They ride bad. The are terrible in the rain even though they are All Season and not All Terrain tires. They wear bad.

Then upgrade to the Silent Armor. Much better than the Wrangler RT/S.

Update
After 10k miles I am still happy with the GY Wranglers I bought from Wally World. They are wearing just fine after 2 rotations and no complaints as mentioned here by the nea sayers. They are quite and handle just fine in the rain. Next update in 5k miles.

I have 181k on the odometer with the original trans, engine and front end components. I have replaced the outer tie rods.
