2002 explorer 4.0 4x4
Hey you guys. Newbie here. I am an old school mechanic(carbureted cars and trucks) and this new computerized stuff seems like a fun challenge. I recently got a 2002 explorer that runs great, with the exception of the fact that the transmission doesn't work. It is a 4x4, and I checked the fluid today, and it is really low. I jacked up the truck level and checked the fluid in the drain plug with the engine running, and it had like 1 drop that came out. The line pressure is definitely high, as I can hear the pump whine like a baby when it is running. The check engine light is not on yet, so I think the previous owner shut it off before frying the tranny. Also have the infamous "O/D off" light blinking, so there is a tranny code stored in the computer.

Got a couple questions:

1. I can't drive this thing anywhere, so what's the cheapest way for me to pull the codes in the computer for the trans.?

2. Is low fluid enough to throw a code in the computer?

3. I don't see any trans. fluid leaking anywhere, except at the cooler where the lines connect in the front, by the radiator, so where did the fluid go?

4. can I disconnect the battery, and do a simple body ground reset to clear the codes?

Thanks in advance guys...

1. Here are some links assist you with the codes. The bottom link has some alternative methods of checking codes.

Here is my research when I had trouble with my 03 Explorer. I hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply. Some of those links aren't there anymore. I guess they got deleted?

I will see if I can find it again. There is a forum just for transmissions you may have more luck looking there.

Here is the link for checking codes without a scanner.

I don't know what happened to my research, but I am going to try to find out. I spent over a month gathering that info and am in the middle of a transmission repair/swap and I really don't feel like looking it up again.

I understand how you feel. I hope the trans. swap is going good for you and thank you again for the help.

Does the 02 explorer have an EEC-IV test port? And if not, will the elmscan 5 read the tranny codes?
