Hey everyone thanks for the awesome feedback on my previous posts. This is what I have decided to get for my explorer:

Head Unit:

Pioneer DEH-P3100 - Easy controls, decent price, detachable face

Door Speakers:

Pioneer TS-A6865 6x8"'s - Good sound, decent price

Rear Sub:

MTX Thunderform with one 10" sub - Expensive but worth it, no amp, too high price.

Ok now my questions: Can I use the factory amps for all my new speakers? Do I want to use the factory amps for my new speakers? If not any recommendations within a decent price range? What do you think of this setup? I will be installing all this stuff myself, I am ordering from crutchfield so i'll have instructions and support if I mess up. I will take pics throughout the process also and put them on a page. That's all for now, happy explorin.

I would not use the stock amps with the new speakers. The stock amps are actually less powerful that your new head unit. I have the Pioneer 4100. Same as the 3100 just a multi color display. If you have the premium jbl system your 4-way amp only puts out 15 watts per channel. The head unit puts out 22 RMS and 45 max. As for the sub I would consider buying an amp. Even if it is just a cheap one like a 2channel 50 watts that you could bridge to power the sub. There is a Kenwood amp that Crutchfield sells for about $150.

If you are looking to save money buy the 3 way speakers for the front and 2 ways for the back. I say do this because the Pioneer head unit has a feature called the Front Image Enhancer. It is basicly a bulit in cross-over for the rear speakers. You can select 3 different settings and your rear speakers will only play bass. Thus helping create the "sound stage" up front.

Rememeber you are going to have to bypass or remove your stock amps boefore you install the rest of the new stuff. I would just take out the old amps and rewire the truck with new, higher quality wire. It will make a difference.

What you are buying sound pretty good though. I already bought a pioneer head unit (DEH-P4100) and I am going to buy a pair of 3way pioneers and a pair of 2ways. Then I am putting a dual 10" box with 2 10" Rockford subs.

Good Luck

i highly recomend an amp for the sub and the speakers... you will notice a big difference.

There is an Infinity amp in Crutchfield that's 50x4 and 200x1 for $400. It retails for over $1000. If you get that, it would power everything. I was ready to shoot myself when I saw that price because I just ordered another amp for $300 and could have got the infinity for $400 and sold my other for $175 instead buy buying the new one.

I have to agree with mtxplorer, buy an amp. The only tip for you is: DO NOT buy a Rockford Fosgate amp. They are too expensive. You can find something much cheeper and it will put out the same watts. My opinion is to go with a Crossfire amp. You may not find them in Crutchfield but you will get your moneys worth

i have had a bad experience with infinity amps... infinity is definately a SPEAKER company ... not an amp company... i fried a few speakers on my digital 100 because the dc to ac converter blew. it may just be a fluke, but im staying away from them.... im going all alpine electronics now

Godfather

That Infinity is the amp I'm using to power my system. I'm extremely impressed with it, no problems yet. It fits perfectly under the rear seat (that sucker's BIG). I read a review in Car Audio awhile back that said it had the flattest frequency response of any amp they have ever tested. It also has built in crossovers so that's one less piece of equipment to buy. You really want to shoot yourself? I picked it up for $290 at the Harman Audio Outlet.

peace

Mike

Hi newbz,

Do you already have the stock subwoofer setup, or do you have the cargo net you're going to replace? If you have the cargo net, then you'll have to buy an amp, regardless to push the sub, even if you do use the stock amp for the other speakers. Sorry, I don't remember your older posts if you had a stock sub or not.
