Shopping for a GPS for my truck and want to get your opinions on what's out there... I'd like to have the option of hooking it up to the LCD screen I'm about to install...
well.... in my case... I'm in Real Estate.... getting from point A to point B is a big deal for me.... I can't afford to get lost.... especially with clients tailing me...
Try going to www.fatwallet.com to get a deal. I know my brother got a $5 earthmate GPS off of some deal listed there, and it works fantasically. We took it to NC and on our cruise, and it is amazing... plus for $5, you cant go wrong. I'll try to get the exact model number.
that's right! I was checking this site when looking for a new computer but never really thought to look for a GOS or other crap...
BTW - it's a great place for any good deals. Fatwallet also lists all the mistakes people and companies make advertising.... I even know people that got round trip tickets to London on United for dirt cheap...
thanks,
What I need to know though is what people on this board use in their trucks... basically.
Forget just a GPS unit. Go buy a Palm M515 PDA and the Magellan GPS attachment for it. Or get what I have, a Compaq Ipaq and the Navman GPS/navagation set up. With a PDA and GPS attachment you have a bigger color screen, more features, and it's a navagation unit to boot. 100 times better than a stand alone GPS unit. My Ipaq even has voice comands as well!!!
I also have the Compaq Ipaq PDA w/ traveroute GPS software, plus GPS sleeve.....it works FANTASTIC!!!!
plus the voice command, streetname announcement, turn by turn, and alternate route/detour capabilities make this a powerful puppy!
I too am looking to get GPS for my Ipaq, thing that is taking me so long is there aren't too many with decent topo maps, actually only one with decent topo maps, thats the Delorme one. If anyone has another one with a TOPO map function let me knw, I would be interested to find out about it, but any others I found online the topos suck.
Looks like Garmin is the brand that covers lots of ground. Now... I need one to install in my truck permanently... sounds like Garmin Street Pilot or Garmin GPSMAP would be the choice... or go with a PALMPILOT...
I bought one of those external GPS antennas for Laptop computers. It was a Rand McNally and included their software. Unfortunately, I moved to Europe and didn't have no use for it. I came across a Microsoft Autoroute software that has support for GPS (and included Europe) and this thing works great! I'm telling you this thing is worth it - before we had this me and my wife would argue constantly because she can't read a map to save our lives. We still get off course every now and then but it doesn't bother me since I know where we're at.
Anyways, if you already have a notebook computer these things are around $40.00. You don't need the most advanced compute either. I bought a used Pentium II, with a DVD for $300.00. The kids can watch DVD's on it (when I'm not using the GPS function of course). Just another option for you.
Don't fool around with any Palm, iPaq, or other solutions. They are cumbersome and don't offer the same level of features as a full blown GPS.
I use my GPS heavily when I'm on my motorcycle, and I can tell you that Garmin builds the best GPSes on the market. If you've got the bucks, go for the Garmin Streetpilot. It has a large screen and takes memory cards so you can carry lots of maps with you. You can also get a color screen.
If you are on a tight budget, go with the Garmin GPS V. It's the one I have and it's built well and works great. I was in a motorcycle crash that flipped the bike 4 times and skidded 150 feet. The Garmin unit held tight and survived the crash in perfect working condition. I still use it today.
OK.... Garmin Street Pilot sounds like a winner then.... now I just need to watch FatWallet for deals... ebaY is kind of scary ...... since retail on this unit even through FatWallet is about $890.00 ebaY has a few listed for around $500.00.... I'd be willing to pay a little more but be sure that I get a quality product..... not like some things that fall off the truck.
