Don't fool around with any Palm, iPaq, or other solutions. They are cumbersome and don't offer the same level of features as a full blown GPS.
I use my GPS heavily when I'm on my motorcycle, and I can tell you that Garmin builds the best GPSes on the market. If you've got the bucks, go for the Garmin Streetpilot. It has a large screen and takes memory cards so you can carry lots of maps with you. You can also get a color screen.
If you are on a tight budget, go with the Garmin GPS V. It's the one I have and it's built well and works great. I was in a motorcycle crash that flipped the bike 4 times and skidded 150 feet. The Garmin unit held tight and survived the crash in perfect working condition. I still use it today.
I think this is all personal preference. It really depends on what you want. Garmin is a great unit. however if you already have $400 or $500 + invested in a nice color PDA there are several solutions out there for the PDA that are equal to the garmin. I like the PDA cause I want TOPO and an the ability to easily save my routes (I know you can do that on the garmin) and I want Color, since I already have the money invested in the PDA why not? I am not woried about portability, I want an external antenna and it will be mounted in the truck easliy accessable to me the driver. And it offers me other features that a garmin wont, address book, calendar, games....
