I recently changed my fan, water pump, and thermostat in my 91 ext. Now when I drive at least 25 Miles on the highway my heat temperature gradualy decreases to the point where it is cool to luke warm. I to have the problem of the cycling temperature gauge. I have not replaced the radiator cap yet. Could this be a heater core problem? A defective therostat? I have no clue????

2 thoughts, 1) Thermostat is defective, not closing fully so the water circulates through the radiator and never really gets to operating temp in the block.

2) What are the outside temps? If it's really cold you may just need to put some cardboard in front of part of the radatior so the block can get up to temp.

Wow 2 thoughts, a record.

Thanx for the reply Rob!! I may just have to try a new themostat. I got it from Napa. It is about 20 to 30 outside here in Cleveland, but I never had this problem before.

How in the world do you guys go and change your thermostat in a flash? It took me like 3 hrs to do mine!@ I guess you take off the belt and the alternator? I know I did not wnat to mess with that on the day I changed mine maybe I should have to save 2 hrs!

Gigantor,

I just changed my thermostat a week ago (that makes the 5th change in 9+ years). The first time took forever, but now I can do it pretty quickly. I use a short 10mm box end wrench for the hidden bolt, and a 10mm socket for the other two.
